Tony Denton New York, New York Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 01/17/2012 | This is a great place to shoot for many reasons, however, Ruth is not one of those reasons. It's only 5 minutes from NYC and the skeet fields are decent. The kids who work there are terrific; they are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Rob is a decent guy too, but his mother Ruth is just plain rude. She is condescending to her customers and treats her staff like crap. If you can manage to ignore Ruth and not let her nasty personality bother you, it's a fun day. |
Sam Highland, New York Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 01/09/2012 | There aren't a lot of skeet clubs left around and after a time off of shooting, there's still no better way to learn (re-learn) clay target shooting then time on a skeet field. So, it's great that Thunder Mountain still exists. Having said that, Ruth and Rob don't make it easy to be a customer there. These people must have either been screwed by customers repeatedly through the years or are just obsessed with making sure they get every cent of theirs. Through the course of a 3 hour visit to shoot, I must have been asked about payment 4 times today. Then, when we were done, and time to pay, I was informed that they no longer accept credit card. In this day and age, not accepting credit cards is a bit ridiculous. Having said all that, it was great to see the clientele including a non-trivial proportion of under 40 year olds. And that's good. |
Mike D Bronx NY Visitor Once Reviewed 01/09/2012 | Went to thunder mt for the 1st time yesterday and it was a very nice friendly atmosphere. My only complaint was the trap field was a little small and shooters stood a little to close to each other. |
Sal D Basking Ridge, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 01/09/2012 | I have been shooting at TM since the 60's when it was a Winchester franchise..after a long absence I started shooting again and met Ruth and Rob. These are two knowledgeable and gracious people who are always eager to help. Any advice either of them gave me, including making a gun change when I was struggling, was excellent and right on target (no pun intended). I bought a few guns from them and found that their prices were competitive and as far as ammo goes you are buying on site and after all they are in business to make a living, so if it costs a dollar or two more than the big box stores so be it. If you are a high volume shooter consider reloading. I have brought several first time shooters up there and they were treated wonderfully and Laurie or one of the other trappers was very patient with them on the practice trap. I give them 5 stars.. |
Tony Perkins Chester, NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 11/15/2011 | I took two people from work today. One that's never shot a gun and another that's only shot trap once. It was my first time to Thunder Mtn but I've shot my whole live. So there was a lot of newness in our group. The staff at Thunder Mtn couldn't have been better! They helped the new shooters and made there experience wonderful. Net result, two more people hooked on our sport! Thanks! Tony |
kurt navratil rockaway, nj Visitor Once Reviewed 10/08/2011 | My wife and I had not shot a shotgun in over 35 years. So for her birthday I took her to Thunder Mountain. The staff was great in the
office, we told them we were first timers. They told us they love first timers. They put us in a group of 7. Our instructor was Randy a young guy, but knew his stuff. He was a bit quiet at first but than opened up and we all got a long fine. If you go there for as a first timer, ask for Randy. I'll be going back and hope he'll be there. I hit 20 out of 25 clays. Not bad for not shooting in many years. I was top shot for our group of 7. You can't beat the price and how easy it is to get there. A great way to spend some time with family and friends. |
John Millburn, NJ Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 09/28/2011 | I went to Thunder Mountain this Sunday afternoon to get the rust out ahead of hunting season with a few rounds of trap. I go there about once or twice a year to get in some practice.
Staff was friendly and helpful to me and others who are not regulars. They made it easy. |
Adam Flushing, NY Visitor Once Reviewed 09/28/2011 | Great place, friendly owner. Walked right in and I barely even said anything and the owner set me right up, really nice. An hour wait but as expected on a Saturday arriving at around 1pm. A little confusing if you've never been there. I got lost getting there from Flushing. The range was nice, in the middle of the woods. At first walking to the main desk there were a lot of people on both sides and it was awkward because I felt new, but let me assure you, these were also beginners as well as I found out later. I think if you go with a group of 6 people you could get your own range and instructor. It was just me and gf so we went with two other groups of two as well. I don't really know our instructors name, but he was very helpful. Without some of his useful tips I wouldn't have been able to shoot ten in a row like I did. Got lost, but once you know your way there it should be easy to get there. Prices are very good I think. $18.50 a person for 25 shots and 25 targets with ear plugs. If it's your first time then be sure to know that you cannot reuse the clay targets as they break on impact with the ground. So it's basically if you miss you move on to the next shot until you have no more ammo left. Next time I'm going to do 50 targets :D.
DIRECTIONAL HELP: Instead of getting directions to Morris RD, get directions to the end of MANSION RD right by Shepard Pond. This is the real location of the skeet range. Good Luck. |
Bob Bieder Bronx, NY Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 09/19/2011 | I have been going for several years as an enthusiast of trap. I only get to go a few times each year and the folks always make it enjoyable. I often come with friends and family and picnic in the park. I have brought many first time shooters and each and every one of them wants to go back again and again. The staff are always friendly and helpful and make sure that even the worst shooters have a good time. This is a great place to truly enjoy a great family activity. |
David Thomas Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 09/19/2011 | I am a complete shooting novice. I brought my 72 yr. old father-in-law, and 9 yr. old son. We all had a blast. My son could not shoot, but they made him feel great. The service behind the desk was personable and professional. The shooting instructors were pleasant and provided great guidance and tips. Overall, we had a very fun time and we will be going back soon. |
Fred Steinacker Old Tappan, New Jersey Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 08/23/2011 | I have hunted for years now with shotguns and rifles and shot some clays out of a hand thrown clay devices.
I never shot sporting clays at a regular clay range before.
I just retired and wanted to start shooting on a regular basis.
I belong to a range in upstate NY but never use the shotguns there on clays, just to fire slugs and buckshot and my big bore rifles.
I was talking to a friend of mine and he said why don't you try shooting clays at Thunder Mountain in Ringwood NJ.
I said I never heard of it, he told me go on their web sight and check it out.
I and the wife went up in June and was really impressed with the place and the staff. Went back again in July. Went back in August again with a neighbor. Will keep on going back very nice place, very helpful and nice people that own and work at Thunder Mountain.
I see quite a few young people there and it makes me happy that people are getting into sports with firearms.
There are too many anti-gun people out there that just do not know how you can have fun and be safe with firearms.
Thunder Mountain is a great place for beginners and for people that love to shoot sporting clays.
Great place try it.

Marianne Allendale, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 08/23/2011 | We've enjoyed shooting trap at Thunder Mountain for over 10 years. For the first time shooters we often bring, the instruction is thorough and patient. We value having this facility near us, and appreciate that they always offer such a warm welcome to new enthusiasts as well as experienced shooters. We really value that this facility is available to us - to be able to introduce someone to this great sport for the price of a box of shells and the clays (without having to invest in a shotgun) is so appreciated. We also appreciate the 'no nonsense' safety practiced in the entire facility.

Mike P. Oakland, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 07/27/2011 | Let me start by saying that I am relatively new to clay shooting - just started about 4-5 months ago. I have been going to TM almost every week since I started. 25+ times so far and counting. So far the entire staff has been great. Overall, I have found everyone to be very knowledgeable and I have received great tips and advice when it comes to shooting. Randy, Marco, Mike, etc. My scores have improved dramatically from when I first started. I also have received a lot of great info with regards to choosing to the right gun. The owner Rob is a very nice guy and so is his wife. Rob has let me try out different guns on more than one occasion. What better way to see if a gun is good for you than to try it. He also has some of the best prices around on new guns. Not too much to say about the clubhouse. It is about what you’d expect. It’s clean, comfortable and relaxing - although I usually don’t spend too much time in there. Occasionally there may be a wait to shoot but it has never been too long. I usually go in the mornings on the weekends or on Friday afternoons and it is not crowded at all. Prices to shoot seem fair to me, but TM is really the only place I go so I do not have much to compare them too. I buy round cards and it winds up being much cheaper - about 6 bucks or so per round. I definitely recommend going this route.
I have read a couple negative reviews about Ruth and also about how Thunder Mountain is “all about the money”. I guess everyone has their own experiences, so I can’t really comment on them. I’d like to share one of mine though. About a month ago, I went up to TM to shoot some trap. When it came time to pay, I went into my wallet to get my round card and I could not find it anywhere. Round cards are like cash or a gift card and if you lose it, it’s like losing cash. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed. Anyway, once I realized, I could not find the card, I pulled out some cash to pay with. Ruth told me not to worry about it and to go home and see if I could find my card; and if not, I could pay next time. I don’t know of too many places that would do that…Do you? Especially places that are “all about the money”. Fast forward one week. I am back at TM to shoot some more trap. This time Rob and his wife are at the front counter. I explain what happened a week earlier and I remind them that I still owe them money. Rob says no problem…he asks me how much I had left on my card before I lost it and he gives me a new card. How many places do you know that would do this??? I have been going there for a while now, so they know me a bit and I suppose there is some level of trust there, but still…It was my own fault that I lost my card, not theirs. Try walking into Wal-Mart and telling them you lost a gift card and see what they say. Talk about being cool. It’s the little things like this (although this was not that little) that will keep me coming back to Thunder Mountain for years to come. I give Thunder Mountain 5 stars. Thanks.

Ben Park Ridge, N.J. Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 07/14/2011 | I have been shooting here since the 60's. It has always been a convenient location for me and some years I would go as often as twice a week. The owners are knowledgeable but they don't suffer fools gladly. The trap pullers are all friendly and knowledgeable. |
Carl B Pompton Plains, NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 07/14/2011 | I took my 14 year old son there yesterday. Reviews are 100% accurate - they are very friendly and are great working with first timers. My son had a great time and we'll definitely be going back. |
Bill W. Wayne, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 06/30/2011 | Have been going to Thunder Mountain about once a week (on average) for the past year or so. Overall a decent place to shoot. Most of the pullers are very friendly and pretty knowledgeable. I have to say that many of the other reviews are very accurate about the older woman (Ruth). She can be (and many times is) very rude and condescending to people (both customers and employees). It’s strange, because it is almost never warranted. She just really comes off as shrewd and nasty (don’t let the fake smile fool you). Again, I have been going to Thunder Mountain consistently for over a year now; so my opinion is based on a large sample size, not just one or two isolated incidents. She really does make you not want to go there at all. I still go mainly because it is convenient (and I don’t want to bite my nose to spite my face). I just try to have as little interaction with Ruth as possible. You’d be wise to do the same. It’s a shame, because most of the rest of the staff is very friendly. The guy Rob (owner) is a nice guy, but a bit full of “it” when it comes to trying to sell you stuff. His prices are pretty good though if you can get him down. Again, a nice enough guy, but do your own research on products before you buy from him.
Another tip…It can be expensive to buy ammo from them. I recommend buying ammo by the case (or from somewhere else) as they are very expensive if you buy from them by the box. |
Lee Montclair NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 06/27/2011 | Great place, friendly staff - except for the lady behind the counter. She's awful, as mentioned in previous posts. Once you get out of the cabin, you're good to go. The place was a mess when I went, but it was after a holiday weekend and they said the garbage hadn't been collected. All in all a fun day with a large group of experience and inexperienced shooters. I wont be heading back anytime soon though, the prices are high and the lady at the desk really pissed me off. |
Al Bauer Montvale, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 06/19/2011 | Well what more can I say that has not been said in the tremendous reviews of Thunder Mtn - Oh yes not only are the staff and pullers wonderful towards beginners and experts alike - but the shooters and guests are terrific, warm, friendly, and inviting. So come and watch or even better come and experience some of the friendliest shooters in the nation - from novice to expert everyone is welcome and accepted into this most excellent shooting community. Ladies don't be bashful as women of all ages are the fastest growing segment in shooting sports, and Thunder Mtn provides a wonderful environment for Ladies and children to learn safe firearms handling while enjoying the clay target sports offered. So Ladies, Gentlemen, and entire families alike come to enjoy the various sports offered. Safety first is the credo Thunder Mtn lives by. So staff and shooters all share in assuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.
And after your shoot relax in the comfortable clubhouse with a cool or hot beverage or take a short drive down to Shepard Lake to picnic, swim, paddle a boat or enjoy the relaxing NJ Botanical Gardens and take in the serenity of the gardens. I promise there is something for everyone to enjoy - but let the enjoyment begin with the exhilaration of clay target shooting at Thunder Mtn. - where you are always welcome. |
MIKE LIANO MAHWAH, NJ 07430 Visitor 6-10 Visits Reviewed 06/05/2011 | Gun safety noticed thruout my visits/ 1st time shooters are sent to practice area with qualified instructor that supervises the 1st timer as to how to safely load/ aim/ & discharge the shotgun being used. On the actual skeet range, any fraction of unsafe handling of gun is immediately dealth with by fellow shooters. They do not want even the slightest chance for someone to get "accidentally" hurt thru someones carelessness. I feel safe when I am there enjoying the freedom of the right to bear arms & enjoy my sport to the fullest. Owners care & watch what goes on with the many people that come to shoot. I am not the only there enjoying what is offered. |
Darryl Zack Mahwah Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 05/29/2011 | My son was very worried because the first time he shot he did not do well and it hurt his shoulder. This time the person from Thunder Mnt helped him to feel more confident. He did well and not can't wait to go back. Thank you! |
Charlie Burke Sussex, NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 05/02/2011 | My wife and I visited TM for the first time last week. We had a great time. All the personnel were extremely helpful and you couldn't ask for a more relaxed friendly atmosphere. I didn't get the name of the gentleman at the practice range but none the less he was great. Marco helped us on the skeet range and again, was outstanding. We will be back very soon. I've got visits planned both with co-workers at the job and a family trip. TM is a must visit. You'll be hooked in no time. Thanks to all. |
Alexander Shenker Brooklyn, NY Member More than 10 visits Reviewed 04/25/2011 | I highly recommend Thunder Mountain. The facilities are great, the owners and staff are extremely friendly and there is a great atmosphere of conviviality, tradition and sportsmanship about the place. You can visit it once in a while, or stick around and learn the ways of clay shooting, and in either case you will love the place, and the people. I have been coming to Thunder Mountain for almost nine years now, and Ruth, and Bob, Jason, Marco, Damien, Randy, Laurie, Nolan and others have really helped me improve my shooting skills. Its a welcome retreat from the monotony and the rat-race of the everyday homogenized world, where guns are used safely for a fun purpose, and friendships are made with interesting characters. |
Robert Johnson Oldbridge Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 03/07/2011 | Old lady behind the desk is REAL B**CHY to the point that you don't want to come back. She makes you feel like a 5 year old the way she talks down to you. |
JAMES KINNELON, NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 12/10/2010 | Took my sons, ages 11 and 8, with me on my 50th birthday. I had never done skeet shooting before but I wanted to do something exciting with my boys. I didn't know what to bring or expect, so I gave a call prior to leaving. I was told that I needed nothing to bring, that they had everything. They were right, right down to the ear plugs that I forgot! The staff couldn't have been nicer. What a great time we had! Under close supervision by one of Thunder Mountain's trained instructors we all hit at least 1 target, even my 8 year old, and I hit 23 of 25. Not bad for a beginner (beginners luck I'm sure). Most importantly, we all got home safe to talk about the great time we had. I'm so very happy that I decided to do this instead of taking a 20 minute helicopter ride around NYC. I'm hooked and it won't be 50 years before I try this again. In fact we've decided to go twice a month. Thanks, Thunder Mountain Staff, for a "BLAST" of a 50th birthday!!! |
Mike Candido Essex Fells, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 11/21/2010 | This is a very nice facility. I found Rob, Ruth, and all of the staff to be very friendly. I've brought my (adult) daughters there and they've received basic instruction from the staff that was very helpful.
One day I brought a wheelchair-bound buddy up there, and, again they went out of their way to make sure he could comfortably shoot and have a fun experience. I can highly recommend them, especially if you're new to the game.

Bob Andover, NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 08/31/2010 | I haven't shot trap in over 10 years, I was a little skeptical to go at first, because my son had never shot at a range. And I remember going other places where the cranky old guys would yell at you if you made a mistake. But my fears were un-founded at Thunder Mountain. You couldn't wish for nicer people. Even the seasoned vets let my son take his time. Great day all around, we will be back... |
Kenneth Kerr Jr. Ringwood Nj Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 06/28/2010 | Years ago before I moved to Ringwood, a good friend of mine and I would drive up from Bergen County to shoot at Thunder Mountain. It was a half day event for us (including breakfast out), and I always had a great time and honed my skills under the terrific direction of the focused staff. Fast forward 15 years and now I live close enough to hear the faint sound of the shotguns on rare days when the winds and humidity are just right. As it turns out, I have "re-discovered" the treasure that is Thunder Mountain now that my son has gained an interest in the sport. What an luxury to now live only minutes away from what is quickly becoming a weekend ritual for us both. Best part of this story is that when I walked into the shop after a nearly two decade absence, virtually all was exactly the same! From the expert staff and their dedication to safety to the comfortable setting and promotion of the sport as a family experience, Thunder Mountain is truly a gold mine in the Highlands. Our thanks to all who make this possible. |

Dr. Andy sachs Wayne, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 09/27/2009 | I try to go at least once a week to shoot skeet. About 3 years ago I read an article in The Record about Thunder Mtn. Skeet Club. Having been away from the sport for many years, the idea of being able to try it out appealed to me. Since then I have purchased one of my guns from them and am a regular shooter.
I find all the staff very friendly and helpful. The owners, Ruth and Rob, are very generous in their advice and are genuinely interested in my shooting experience and enjoyment.
Working with the staff, including Laurie and Jason, makes my shooting very enjoyable. I continue to shoot weekly and am glad to be able to go there on a very regular basis. |
Leonard Strom Bronx, New York Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 08/29/2009 | I started to go to T.M. in April 09 but before that I went there just before my son was born, 15 years ago!
My son asked me if we could go skeet shooting and I said "ok lets go"! Thunder Mountain came to mind right away. I was wondering if the place was still in business. On to the internet and found it was still going strong.
I have found that the staff are young, but are also very knowledgeable about shooting skeet. If you ask, they will give you some very good tips on how to shoot better.
The facilities are in great shape and there is a comfortable atmosphere on the ranges.
I have mostly dealt with Rob, and have found him to be very friendly and courteous with other customers as well as with me and my son. I was looking to buy an O/U shotgun and Rob gave me on to use for a few rounds! I really liked the gun but couldn't afford it:(. When I came back 2 weeks later with a NEW O/U that was in my price range, Rob said "good for you, now go and have some fun"
Laurie is great with first timers, as I took my wife to show her what my son and I love to do so much. My wife had a great time and will bring her friends in the future.
Marco and Jason have been the greatest help to my shooting. Their tips help alot for both me and my son.
As long as I can afford to go to Thunder Mountain I will! My son and I have our own competition and the kid keeps beating me!

James Washingtonville, NY Visitor Once Reviewed 08/26/2009 | I visited this site and shot trap for the very first time here. I just wanted to let everyone know who may be thinking about trying out Trapp shooting that this would be a very good place to start. MH Midland Park, NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 08/14/2009 | As a first time shooter, and aspiring hunter, I found this facility to be more than adequate to the needs of a beginner. The staff were all friendly enough, previous posts stated that management were rude to other staff members. I did notice that a majority of the staff were very young, 16-20 something years old. They were slacking/wasting time (smoking, horsing around, etc.) when I witnessed a manager yelling at them, so to be fair, it was not undue. All members of the facility were courteous and friendly to all customers they encountered. Another previous post(s) mentioned that the staff were knowledgeable yet lacked certain wisdom in regards to shooting. While this may be true in some aspects, it has nothing to do with experience, perhaps just a lack of refinement or passion. All members of the staff were very helpful and encouraging to this first timer, giving correcting advice and constructive criticism along the way( which really helped!). I purchased my own target load ammo at Ramsey Outdoor for $6.50 after reading here that the facility charges $9 per box of 25. To shoot 50 rounds of trap (or maybe it was skeet... the clay just kept moving away from me) was $16, sans ammo or gun rental (I brought all my own). (You could shoot one round of 25 for $8). I tipped the young man a few bucks for being so helpful, and look forward to going back when my shoulder heals sometime next month! Overall, I feel it was almost cheaper than shooting pool in some places in NJ. I got more of an adrenaline rush and feeling of confidence that I wouldn't get after a few rounds of pool and the cocktails that so often coincide! |
Donni Khan Providence, RI Visitor Once Reviewed 07/19/2009 | I went to Thunder Mountain today with my family. We are total beginners, and came about an hour before they closed. Everything was awesome. The lady that sold us the ammo, and Marco (I think that was his name) the guy who was our helper (or whatever the official term is) were fantastic. I've never shot a shotgun in my entire life and I got 18/25 skeets. My other family members did horribly, but it was their own faults.
100% fantastic

Jack Stockman Suffern, NY Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 07/07/2009 | Thunder Mountain in a great place to shoot for beginners. If you are a experienced shooter this is not the place for you. If you are experienced (shooting more than a year) join a private club or a traveling club. Many private clubs in Long Island, Ct, Westchester, Orange Counties.
Pros: instruction is always offered,
Cons: expensive (bring your own ammo...they charge 9 per box...you can go to walmart and get ammo for about 20 for a case of 4 boxes), many private clubs in area let you shoot for 3 a round, also they expect tips for trappers
The owners always want to sell you something you don't need. Especially Ruth. I have seen her act rude to employees but never to customers.
I have been going regularly for the past 2 years. If you want attention go on the off hours....if you go when its crowded they really lack customer service. They are just motivated by making money.
The staff is quite friendly although they may not always be "experts."
Overall...go if you are a beginner. If you are experienced or want to become experienced you will have a MUCH better time in a club. |
Dan Westchester, NY Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 06/23/2009 | Overall, this is the best place I've found to shoot skeet that is within driving distance of Westchester County although it's not without its faults. PROS: Great facility, friendly and reliable attendants, they sell reloading supplies. CONS: Expensive, the owner is sometimes very rude to her employees, if its busy you can easily get packed onto one range with 6 or 7 other shooters, also I've been there literally dozens of times and I still feel like they don't remember me when I come in. If you're an experienced shooter, I recommend trying to go on "off hours" as to avoid getting jammed with a very large group shooting on a single range. If you are a new shooter, I definitely recommend Thunder Mountain as a starting point. |

John Utley Hewitt, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 04/02/2009 | I have been going to Thunder Mountain just shy of 10 years & give it a BIG 2 THUMBS UP!! I went straight in skeet there for my 1st time & got my pin from them to prove it. I actually recommend people visit on a regular basis. I have brought both first timers & seasoned shooters to the facility. Ruth, Rob & the staff have never let me down. Personally, their THUNDER CLAYS humbles me on a regular basis & their sport shop has some great items. So, get your Thunder Card & head for the mountain ASAP. |
Yulik Yagudin Moscow, Russia Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 03/22/2009 | First time I just picked this place as being the nearest from the place I use to stay in US while having vacations. But my first impression made me go there again.
Nice staff, reasonable price, wide choice of shotguns.
But maybe the most surprise was to meet there a staff member speaking excellent Russian.
Hopefully I'll visit again.

Like any sport you need to be prepared to spend some money, but trap/skeet shooting is so much fun...
I highly recommend this place, and its such a cool location. |
chris hoboken, nj Visitor 6-10 Visits Reviewed 11/11/2008 | I've got mixed feelings about Thunder Mountain. I started shooting there and it is a great facility to learn at. They are open to new shooters, the pullers are generous with instruction and if you don't own a gun it is one of the few options in the area. However, the more I went there, the more I noticed I was treated like a dollar sign and not like a valued customer. The last time I shot skeet, I was given a trap gun and belittled when I asked for a skeet gun. I've witness the same cavalier attitude towards other customers as well. It's a great facility to shoot at, just thicken your skin when dealing with the owners. |
Mike Espie North Haledon, NJ Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 10/22/2008 | Great place to shoot in a relaxed environment. There is something for everyone from novice to those who think they are experts. Plan on bringing my 11 year old son there to shoot with me. Only set back is he'll probably love it and that means I'll have to buy him a gun. Just wish the sport wasn't so expensive. Try it out - you'll love it. Plan on trying night shooting. |
Len D. West Harrison, NY Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 09/08/2008 | Thunder Mountain is a great place to shoot! I am new at it and the staff and other shooters are very friendly and helpful (everyone always asks if you want help before jumping in). The facilities are clean and well maintained, prices are fair. I always look forward to my next trip to Thunder Mountain. |
EVAN LAKE HOPATCONG NJ Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 09/04/2008 | I have to say this place stinks to high heaven. The only one I haven't found to be a rude know it all is the owners son. The owner is the rudest snob I have ever met. She tried verbally abusing me and downgrading me in front of other customers. She tried giving me a lecture like she thought she was my mother just because the ammo I had with me I didn't buy from them. Ive seen and heard her be equally as nasty to her employees as well. The staff is comprised of a bunch of kids who think that they are professional trap shooters just because they work at a trap range and they will sit there and even though not asked put in their two cents. The facilities are ok but the people there ruin the whole thing. |
Fred Derr Vernon, New Jersey Visitor Once Reviewed 08/10/2008 | My Son (19)and I(53) were first timers at this facility Saturday 8/9/08 we were instantly treated as old friends, ALL of the staff were very helpful to the last detail. It was our extreme pleasure to have Damian as our assister/teacher and coach, He was just fantastic to the last detail. I would encourage everyone who has an interest in shooting or learning to shoot to visit this facility they are ALL pros in every way. THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES |
boby mahwah NJ Visitor Once Reviewed 08/03/2008 | I really enjoyed it. I never shot a gun before but I have shot a bb gun. they gave me a .410 and I hit 15 the first time and 18 the next time. That's pretty good for a 11 year old. They let me shoot there at the age of 11. I give it a ten.

I plan on going back in mid July with more people. |
Carlos Escobar Hartsdale, NY Visitor Once Reviewed 05/04/2008 | This place was fantastic. This is the second time in my life I've ever gone to a range and fired a gun so needless to say...I'm a novice, but the staff and the facilities were great. I went with a buddy and my sister and we all had a blast. I couldn't believe how much fun we had and it's a relatively cheap day!!! We each spent about $60 and that was plenty for us. The guns they lent us were fine...although I guess we wouldn't know the difference anyway. Overall I give this place a 9. I'd give them a 10 if they had sporting clays...but hey...you can't have it all I suppose. Great place, I'll definitely be heading back very soon. |

Alex Norwalk, CT Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 03/03/2008 | I have now been to this location twice, and plan on going back. I have found the staff very nice and easy to deal with. Having been a bird hunter for the last 20 years, I am just getting into true skeet and have been humbled greatly, but I have found the staff very intuitive and easy to deal with. They have no problem walking someone through the process and if asked giving advice and training. Good overall club. One of the nicest clubs I have come across here in the northeast. |

John Ridgewood, NJ Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 12/01/2007 | We have taken Boy Scouts to this facility twice and both times we have received excellent service. The boys had a good time and received solid instruction from the staff. The adults, beginners and experienced, also enjoyed themselves. It is a clean, safe environment with a friendly and helpful staff. I recommend it for youth groups and first timers. It makes a great day out with the family also. Kevin Gruetzner westchester NY Member More than 10 visits Reviewed 11/11/2007 | I have shot there many times, it was the first place i ever shot. They were very helpful in teaching me the fundamentals of the games. They rented me a gun appropriate for my size and they were very courteous to me. They have great staff that help you whenever you need it weather its for a gun problem or shooting stances they are very helpful. It is the best facility that I have ever shot at. I have shot there for fun and have shot in leagues that they have held. They are both fun and a great experience to participate in. I am now a regular customer there. I go there 3-4 times a week and am greeted every time I walk into the doors. This shooting facility is simply a great place to shoot whether you are new to shooting or a veteran shooter. |
Vicki Travis Dobbs Ferry, NY Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 10/22/2007 | This is the worst place I have ever shot. The people were rude and the owners were verbally abusive to the kids that worked there. As a new shooter, I asked the owner's son to help me with my new Beretta semi automatic. He tried to get me to buy a used gun from him a month or so prior. When I asked for his help in putting it together he was so rude and said, why should I help you, you didn't buy the gun from me. I thought he was kidding, but he wasn't. We were shocked. This was my third visit and the two visits prior had seen similar rudeness. The owner left me waiting at the desk and just ignored me every time. The 3rd time was the last straw and I would never spend my money at such a terrible place again. I've heard other stories similar and find it interesting that no one has posted one here. I now shoot three days a week, but would never ever go there again. |

Many of the pullers are experienced shooters who can provide advice on the proper form and techniques. It's a very homey feeling place and the scenery is beautiful. If you don't have a gun and are willing to buy ammo from them, they will lend you a shotgun with the gauge of your choice.
Be aware of shooting skeet of the #1 field, it has the five stand gates laying between you and the flight path, creating a distraction on your shots. |

The staff is great, they keep things running smoothly while keeping it low key. We had several first time shooters with us (who were a bit nervous) but they made everyone feel right at home. Anytime someone new comes to visit me, I bring them here. In fact, I am bringing a rookie out on Saturday! It can get crowded but I have never had a bad experience while waiting. If you're looking for something new to do, or want to show someone a good time (male or female), give Thunder Mountain a try. You won't regret it. |
Mark Valente Dumont, New Jersey Visitor Once Reviewed 10/19/2006 | Much like the other reviews posted, I too had a wonderful experience at Thunder Mountain. I purchased my first shotgun earlier today and then spent the afternoon in the practice trap range shooting clays.
Since I arrived before opening time I had the opportunity to strike up conversation with a few of the regulars. These gentlemen were highly experienced shooters and were happy to offer some me some shooting advice and suggestions for equipment (recoil pad). Once the facilities opened, Ruth and her staff made me feel right at home(Thank you Laurie and Tyler). What else can I say, a great location and a pleasant, experienced staff. I'm hooked on shooting and cannot wait to get back up there.
