My family, friends & I have shot sporting clays at Colorado Clays for close to 20 years and have always enjoyed ourselves on the well designed and maintained course - until an incident last Friday. We had an out of town guest with his two teenage sons the week after Christmas, and the boys wanted to learn how to shoot clays. I called the range on Wednesday and asked if there were any special events scheduled for Thur. or Fri. that we might want to avoid. The lady responded that there was nothing on the agenda, but that Thur. they were only open from noon til five and Fri. they were open 9 - 5. The wind was really bad on Thur. so we waited until Friday to go to the range. We (myself, my wife, our guest and his two sons) started around 1 p.m. The boys slowed us down a lot and finally stopped shooting around station 11 - one from sore shoulder and the other one got cold. The remaining 3 adults then started moving faster, and I figured we had enough time to finish the course, get back to the clubhouse, pay, pack and leave well before 5. To my surprise the range officer came by at 4:20 as we finished st station 13 and told us to quit shooting. I asked why, and he said that the office closed at 4:30 and the County (Adams) required all shooting to stop at sundown. I pointed out that we had a long way to go until sundown & that the range website clearly states 5 p.m. as the closing time & that the clerk told me 5 p.m. when I had called a couple of days before. He said we had to take it up with Doug (manager). We got in the cart and got back to the clubhouse at 4:27. I asked Doug what was going on. He said the office closed at 4:30 and that all shooting had to stop at sundown. I pointed out that the clerk and the website both gave 5 p.m. as the closing time, and that he sun had a long way to go before it "Set". He said that the 5 p.m. information that I had been given by the clerk and that is posted on the website was a "mistake". I asked him what time was official sundown for that day (Dec.30) and he didn't know. (When I got home I checked - legal sundown was at 4:44). I said "this is your range, and when I signed in I agreed to follow your rules, so what do I owe you?" He calculated our bill, I wrote him a check, got a receipt, and left. He only charged us for the targets we actually shot, so there was no ripoff - just 24 minutes of lost shooting tme - but it was a turnoff. It would have been so easy for them to have prevented this sort of unpleasantness by proper up-front communication.

8 of us went and shot every shotgunning game they had. We normally shoot Sporting Clay courses, but Doug, my contact there, opened the club for us and we shot wobble, trap, skeet, Sporting Clays, and their own game, "Colorado Trap". All fields are well maintained and clean. All traps worked well and we found the Sporting Clays course fun and challenging. We had one new shooter with us and Doug took time out to give her pointers.
Not much in the way of rental guns, but there are a few.
Next time I'm in Denver, I'm going to spend another day at Colorado Clays!!!

I haven't gone to many ranges, but this one by far has given me the best clay shooting experience. The next outing to shoot some clays in preparation for this 2007 hunting season, I'm going here.

This is an awesome club I would rather shoot there than any other range. Doug the owner is a very accomplished shooter and knows how to set up a very challenging Sporting clays range

This is the best running clay club on the front range. They have 5 trap ranges (many can throw doubles), two skeet ranges, and a 12 station clays course. The clays course is always set very challenging and changes on a regular basis. Your scores will be lower here, but you will be challeged. It is in a creek bottom, so most of the course is in the shade which is very nice in the summer. usually serves a small lunch on the weekend and has a nice clubhouse. Very affordable and well run.
