Dick Schwartz Oakand, MD Visitor Once Reviewed 02/03/2012 | Had the pleasure of shooting six rounds of skeet at Myrtle Grove today. All the staff were just great--Southern Hospitality--is alive and well. Very conveniently located. Looking forward to returning. Thanks, Guys. |
Tom Schwartz Rock Hill, SC Visitor Once Reviewed 12/18/2010 | Visited last week for first time. This facility has nice potential. We shot trap and skeet. Trap fields were nice and well maintained. The skeet range badly needs some adjustments. The low house throws much higher and further outward than regulation. The low house targets don't get to the out of bounds mark even though they should travel well beyond. High and low targets would not cross through a center hoop. We enjoyed the skeet, but shooting at such misaligned targets would "mess you up" for shooting on a regulation field. |
Bob and Fran Mitchell Stottville, New York Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 10/27/2010 | My husband and I stopped out to the Club to shoot a couple rounds of trap. It's a great facility and i would recommend this club to anyone. The staff were nice and helpful especially Bill who made our stay enjoyable. I have shot there before and have asked some of my friends to stop and check out the facility. I plan on returning the next time i visit Myrtle Beach. I can just say it's a nice set up and I had a good time shooting there. |
Curt Brown Cleveland Heights, Ohio Visitor Once Reviewed 07/19/2010 | My brother in law and I shot skeet and sporting clays at Myrtle Grove today. Jim checked us in and got us started with skeet and then was our trapper, cart driver and coach on the sporting course. What a delight Jim was and very friendly and knowledgeable and helped us figure out lead and direction to help us kill more clays. I would highly recommend this club to anyone who wants a break from the chaos while in Myrtle Beach. Thank you Jim you made it a great day. |
Tim Ruppert Shermans Dale, PA Visitor Once Reviewed 06/11/2010 | My family and I were in Myrtle Beach and found the Myrtle Grove Gun Club. It's about 20 minutes from North Myrtle Beach. Three of us had a nice time on the sporting clay course. Jimmy was our trapper and did a great job. The course is all automatic. 10 stations with 10 birds each. We met Bill the mgr on our return to the clubhouse. We shared some snowmobiling stories from NY.
The course was nice to shoot, but I would suggest doing it in the morning before the heat kicks in. We'll definitely return to the club in the future. If you are on vacation in Myrtle Beach, don't forget to bring your shotgun. |
David Wertz Bellwood, PA Visitor Once Reviewed 04/10/2010 | We were on a long weekend visit to Myrtle Beach and I wanted to shoot trap with my daughter Amanda while we were here. I found them via a google search and was also given a recommendation from a guy at the gun counter at Bass Pro Shop. We arrived on Saturday around 11am and were greeted by the manager Bill. He gave us a brief overview of how it worked and told us that we were welcome to shoot on any trap. Another guy that works there (Jim) checked the trap for us and made sure that we were ok. We shot 4 rounds of trap and had a great time. We talked to a couple other gentlemen (Mr. Hank Cross and another very nice fellow) while we were taking a break. I think they were regulars from the way they talked and they seemed very familiar with Jim.
We had a nice time and would certainly return the next time we are in SC. I was especially impressed with how polite Jim was (he just turned 25 a couple days ago).
One final thing, someone posted that a round of trap was $10.00. When we arrived, Bill told us it was 5.00/round and that is what we paid when we checked out. |
Greg Fiske Winston Salem, NC Visitor Once Reviewed 03/16/2010 | I shot there yesterday and had a great time! The facility is awesome and the staff great. Everyone was very helpful and the 10 station coarse was excellent, very challenging for both novice and expert alike. My only regret was that we didn't have more time to stay. I'm really looking forward to going again. Don't head to the beach without bring your shotgun and a plan to visit the great facility! |
Rocco Myrtle Beach, SC Member 2-5 Visits Reviewed 12/12/2009 | I'm a new member to the Gun Club and it is a super place! Bill and Jim are great guys, and have been especially helpful being I am a novice with long guns. I highly recommend Myrtle Grove either as a member or a guest.
Thanks! |
Jamie Bethea Surfside Beach, SC Visitor Once Reviewed 11/16/2009 | Visited Myrtle Grove today and had a fantastic time. Very laid back atmosphere, but also very professional. Manager and other shooter were both helpful and very informative in sharing shooting tips. Highly recommend this club for those looking for exciting and challenging time. Very accommodating to novice shooters. Also very reasonable prices. |
Michael Provenzano Drayden, MD. Member 2-5 Visits Reviewed 12/23/2008 | I shot Myrtle Grove a couple of weeks ago and had a great time, Jimmy was there to answer any questions and reload targets as needed. The only bad thing about Myrtle Grove is it's 400 miles from where I live so I can only shoot there a few times a year. |
G Stewart Belmont , NC Visitor Once Reviewed 09/22/2008 | First visit today while vacationing in Myrtle Beach. I enjoyed the first round so much I shot a second round. Great course. Jim is a great trapper. He gives advice on the birds without taking away the challenge. I will visit, and shoot more rounds the next time I am in Myrtle beach. I hope to bring a group next time. If I call ahead Jim and Bob will take good care of the group. The skeet field looked very nice. I did not shoot the skeet field. Bob made me feel welcome. Nice shirts in the Pro Shop. |
Kelly Andrews Raleigh, NC Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 09/22/2008 | This is the third contractors association shoot that we have held at the club in the past 24 months and each time things get better. Gun Club Manager Bill Martin, his son Jim and the rest of the staff are very accommodating and easy to work with. The 10 station course offers alot of variety and they have added a voice activated skeet set-up that is sweet. And we have had not complaints on the food that we have had....from BBQ, to South Carolina chicken bog, to the fried chicken that Bill and his wife cooked up for us when the caterer got stranded in Texas. For a Yankee, he has learned a lot during his time down south. We'll be back next year and would suggest that you give them a try. |
Dave Latrobe Pa. Visitor Once Reviewed 08/23/2008 | Bill and Jim where great, nice clays course, Jim took me around twice and pulled a round of skeet for me also. I'll be back my next time in Myrtle, and guys thanks for the brunch maybe next time will do dinner.
Thanks again |
Michael Provenzano Drayden, MD. Member Once Reviewed 08/19/2008 | Dave and Jimmy went above and beyond to make sure we got the most out of our day at Myrtle Grove. The trap range is as good as any I've shot at and the Sporting Clay was the most fun I've had on a range in a long time. I was so impressed I became a member and am planning a Sporting Clay/Golf weekend later this year. When at the beach stop by and shoot a round, you'll be happy you did. |

Don Mincher Sunset Beach, NC Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 07/31/2008 | This is definitely a club with unlimited potential. Current operators, Bill Martin and sidekick Jim are the most accommodating folks I have met at any of the clubs I've ever visited. Yes, it is not 'finished' as gun clubs go but with support and more aggressive marketing, it can and will be a Class A property. If you're in the area, give this site a look-see. There are few places to shoot in the immediate area but with patience and support, this will be a great place to shoot. I plan on becoming a member very soon. |
John Miller Keedysville Maryland Visitor Once Reviewed 07/22/2008 | Four of us shot there last summer.(Aug 07) We only shoot once a month back in Maryland. Our experience at your club was super. We were treated nicely and instructed the by staff on how to operate the self throwers. We liked that format for it allowed us to be more relaxed. It was great to have the cart since it was 99 degrees that day. All of the machines operated with no problems. We will be back this August ready for action. Our only request is that it not be SO HOT! What a great way to spend a day of vacation at the beach. |
Phil Keithley Tabor City NC Member Once Reviewed 07/09/2008 | I visited Myrtle Grove last weekend for the first time with a friend and we met Bill Martin and we liked the place so much that I became a member. It is close to my house and we had no issues with the people that worked there or the equipment.
I had never tried the Sporting Clays before so I was not sure about what to do. Shortly after we started at stand one, a trapper showed up to assist us, I think his name was Jim, and make sure we were doing OK. These machines can be operated without a trapper but he offered to work them for us which we accepted. He was very good to us and helped us considerably with advice and direction making our first Sporting Clay event more fun than we could have ever expected. The 10 stations offered a little bit of everything and were very challenging. We could not have asked for a better experience. They provide carts for the course or i assume you could easily walk it also.
We also shot trap which are voice operated. Everything worked well and we also had a good time there. We were able to take our time and really enjoy the experience. Again, we could not have asked for a better time.
I agree with Bill's statement below. Give them a try again and see if the experience is better. I am glad we went and as I mentioned we became members.

Greg Brown Little River, SC Member More than 10 visits Reviewed 04/22/2008 | Great facility!! Bill Martin (manager)and his staff are doing an outstanding job with this gun club. The sporting clays are all automated and are quite challenging. All machines function over 95%. They change the set-up often and really keep you on your toes. Over the last couple of months I have been shooting here a lot and have really been impressed. In the past I shot frequently at Backwoods in Georgetown but its way too far to even consider now that Myrtle Grove is running so good.
I am quite surprised with some of the reviews I read below. Everyone who claims to have had a bad experience should return and see how far along it has come.
They have several carts available, but if its busy and you dont want to wait, the course is easy to walk. They have plans of getting more carts as the membership/support grows.
I recently shot with the owner, whom is quite friendly and a true gentleman to shoot with. He is an outstanding shot and you can tell when you meet him that shooting is his passion.
All the trappers are very friendly and are eager to help you improve. Trust me, they remember what you shot your last time out and where your trouble stations are. They kinda have a competition between them on who can help you get better the fastest. I think that's great!
The trap/skeet fields are operating smoothly and are competition ready.
I have shot at many facilities around the Southeast and find this place to be one of the best. All the place needs is more shooters and more support! Bill Martin and his team are dedicated to see this place grow and are always talking about the future. Plan to visit soon and I am sure that you will be impressed. |
Jim Blackley Charlotte, NC Visitor 6-10 Visits Reviewed 04/03/2008 | I found valid points in most of the post in the reviews below. The facility has good potential. I assume that financing is the reason for the slow progress, but I do not know this.
Over time, I've experienced frequent and arbitrary policy changes regarding the requirement to be accompanied by a trapper on the sporting clays course. The traps are "self service". Your partner traps for you. I like this as it seems more leisurely and enjoyable with just those in your party along. What's the point in having self service traps if having a trapper is required? I admit to not having experience on many courses, so maybe this is the norm.
I've found personnel of be helpful and friendly enough. The exception here is the owner. He spoke to me as arrogantly as I've ever been addressed when I was the customer. I realize that he is a championship shooter, but I wasn't there to be impressed by him or his trophies. Most often, the owner is not present. |
David Pitts Charlotte, NC Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 03/24/2008 | I am the webmaster for www.claytargetsonline.com. I happen to live in NC and we vacation near this club. I was very excited to find the club when it was built a few years ago, but have been disappointed with the results since. The club has been "under construction" for years it seems. The skeet fields are a joke. Don't know about the trap fields. The last time (and I do mean, the LAST time) I shot the sporting course, about 1/4 of the traps would not throw a target. Even though I have to drive an extra hour to get there, I will be going to Backwoods near Georgetown from now on. It is really not worth the time to stop here any more. |
Tommy Gordon Trinity NC Visitor Once Reviewed 03/24/2008 | As a first time visitor I enjoyed the course. The traps were well placed and it was a fun course to shoot. I hope this is not considered a rant but a truthful review. The manager was far from being helpful. Any information about the course had to be extracted from him. No mention of safety requirements or any rules about the course. The owner arrived at the club house and due to the fact our party had the only two carts my son and his wife were ask to give up the cart they were using. We have a beach property 35 miles away and would visit again if a shooter would be more welcomed and deal with a more helpful staff and especially a owner that thought more about paying customers. |
Josh Board High Point, NC Visitor Once Reviewed 03/24/2008 | Directions were great. Well maintained course. Members were nice and welcomed visitors to join them on the course for some "friendly" competition. Trapper was very nice and helpful. The facility needs more carts in order to provide everyone with good transportation. Management rushed us off the Sporting Clays course in order to give our cart to the owner. I feel like I shouldn't be rushed after visiting the facility and paying to shoot with a group of 6. Management could be more friendly, but the trappers and other members make up for that. |
Tony Hensley Rocky Point NC Visitor Once Reviewed 12/16/2007 | I called prior to going to the club (the message said they were open until 5:00 PM)and I drove 90 miles to the club, arrived at 1:30PM to find the club closing at 2:30PM on a Friday. Staff offered to open the course and quickly "run through" to allow me to shoot, however I declined (I did not drive 90 miles to hurry through and shoot). The moral of this story is to NOT listen to the recored message. Wait until you speak to a live person before you commit time (AND GAS)to spend shooting. If you are like me, when I get time to shoot sporting clays, I like to take my time and not feel rushed. It should be something to be enjoyed. |
Hazen Dempster Atlanta Georgia Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 08/02/2007 | I found the sporting clays course to be nice and challenging. The staff was also very helpful, but the support facilities are not finished as this is a part of a larger ongoing development. Directions are accurate. |
Tom Habel Wilmington, DE Visitor Once Reviewed 05/21/2007 | I was there for the PVA trapshoot. The site was still under construction and was not wheelchair friendly. Club house too far from trap houses without sidewalks. With all of this the staff went out of their way to help us out. If we return next year it should be alot better. |
Jeff Gahanna, OH Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 05/29/2006 | I visited last year while on vacation and thought the club had potential but the SC targets were "beach targets" I hit an additional 10-15% of my normal score. This year the targets were much better and my scores dropped by about 5% from my norm. The targets were challenging and fair.
Looks like they are having some sort of management change and the new folks are working out the kinks, still no houses are built. I believe that once some houses are built and the club management stabilizes this will be a great facility. |
Paul H. Charleston, SC Visitor Once Reviewed 05/01/2006 | Good club, great people! When it gets totally finished it will be a great club as well! |
Tim Blazey Southport, NC Member More than 10 visits Reviewed 01/10/2006 | A great club with a very helpful staff. I highly recommend it to any one visiting Mrytle Beach. The sporting course is changed frequently, so you never get bored shooting it. The trap range has voice activated traps, so you never have to worry about having a trapper present. |
Steve Bales Chardon, OH Visitor Once Reviewed 11/24/2005 | My son and I visited Myrtle Grove the day before Thanksgiving '05. The club was still under construction. There were four traps completed and six more underconstruction. Excellent voice relase system and very pleasant people to deal with. Club will be excellent once the remaining traps are finished and the grounds are hydro seeded. We had an excellent afternoon of trap shooting. If you're in Myrtle Beach, it's about a 45 minute drive...and easy to find...just follow the directions. |
Jim Goodwin Ohiopyle, PA Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed on or prior to 11/20/2005 | I recently had the pleasure of visiting your club while vacationing in Myrtle Beach. While our wives lounged on the beach all day, my buddy, Larry, and I visited your club. Little did I know that one of the owners was Jim Martino, who I had known for some time from being affiliated with our gun club in Pennsylvania. What a small world it is. You guys treated us wonderfully, letting us use your facilities even though they weren't quite finished. This is going to be one great gun club. Everthing about it is top notch. Your courses are challenging and exceptional. We will definitely be back each time we visit the beach. We want to thank you for treating us so well during our time at your club. Hope to see you next year. |
Jeff Gahanna, OH Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed on or prior to 11/20/2005 | The site is still under construction (May 2005) but looks like it will be a heck of a site.
Right now the 10 trap fields are under construction with soil graded and houses in place. The background looks good. One of the trap fields will be a combo trap skeet. They also mentioned that a 5 stand will be built.
The sporting clays is finished and was a challenging 10 station course with automatic traps at each station – no need for a trapper unless you come alone. The targets were interesting and deceptively difficult. Lots of rabbits, a few teals, some tough low flying flyers and some easy fliers. Was definitely a set up that could be shot with the smaller gauges – I shot 20 and could see giving it a good run with 28 or 410 for those so inclined. They mentioned that they will be set up with the Beretta range program and therefore rentals will be available. I’ll definitely be back.
Directions from Ocean Isle/Sunset Beach – Hwy 904 West to Hwy 905 South (towards Longs SC), right on Old Buck Creek Road for approximately 3 miles, on right side. Will go by the Willow Tree RV park, there is a sharp bend (15 mph) in the road and then the gun club is about 1/10 of a mile down. |
Craig J. Curione Kannapolis ,North Carolina Visitor Once Reviewed on or prior to 11/20/2005 | Myrtle Grove was still under construction when I visited on Easter weekend 05', but the owners/manager were nice enough to let me and my father in law shoot a round of sporting on their course!! we also shot some trap after that! As far as the facilities go , they were still being developed when we visited, but I can tell it will surely be one of the southeasts premier sporting clays facilities when completed , course layout was excellent, with some VERY challenging fast crossers, and all new remote lincoln infinity series traps, in process was a clubhouse and 4 or 5 trap fields with pat-trap machines in them, very friendly people!! Jon Holder, the manager, was our trapper, and is a super nice guy, also got to meet some of the owners/ partners, also very nice, and all assured me it will be a top notch facility, and I have no reason not to believe them . I WILL be returning the next time I am in Myrtle Beach area!!!! |
