I brought a few friends who are new to clay shooting to island lake today to shoot sporting clays. The course was great. However, customer service was not. The girl behind the counter treated us like we were an inconvenience. Long story short, I know of two young professionals who might have spent thousands over the course of their lives in shooting facilities like this one that now won't- I'll never get these guys out to a real shotgun range again. As for me, I shoot a lot, and will be living in Southeast MI permanently soon. I'll be taking by business elsewhere as well. The attitude of people working at the range should never be a barrier to getting new people into our sport.

My brothers and I were at Island Lake range on labor day weekend. The staff was friendly very helpful & knowledgeable. The rental guns were a blessing also. The stations were clean and well laid out for maximum safety and cleanliness. The only thing I would suggest to add is food, something basic burgers and dogs. We all had an awesome time.

I went to the Island Lake Shooting Range with a buddy this summer. My buddy had shoot at the range previously, it was my first visit. It was refreshing compared the traditional indoor ranges. The people were friendly, there were various shooting options, handguns and shot gun/rifles. A very relaxed environment, a jewel for the State of Michigan. I plan to revisit this winter.

This is an excellent facility. Skeet, Trap, complex 5-stand (referred to as Hunter's Clays), and TWO Sporting Clay Courses are available.
My brother-in-law instructs sporting clays at a five diamond resort course in east Tennessee. The maintenance and upkeep of Island Lake is comparable to his course. I have shot several different courses in multiple states, and Island Lake's blue course is amongst the "friendliest" as far as shot difficulty. The red course is more difficult, but still probably only a 6 or 7 on a 10 scale of difficulty. The shots can be made more difficult by electing for true pairs on report pair assignments, or omitting simpler stands, and shooting complex stands twice. (Something that is possible, thanks to the electronic counter system used.)
My interactions with the staff have been friendly and professional. I would suggest Mr. Ron Grey as an instructor. His approach is laid back, and his instruction is immensely helpful.
I have never utilized the rifle range, but there is one available, as well as a patterning board.
The sporting clays course is absolutely walkable, and makes for a very nice 2 or 3 hours of shooting and a little exercise as well.
Prices seem to be on par with most courses. Ammo prices (like ALL ranges) are substantially higher than buying at a retail outlet.
There is a small snack-bar with available treats and such.
One small aggravation is needing to purchase a state parking permit (because the facility is in a state park). The yearly pass (and membership to the facility) is on a CALENDAR year. (As opposed to a year from the date of purchase.) Daily parking passes are also available.
This is a very solid facility, and probably one of the best, if not the best in SE Michigan.

Island Lake is an excellent facility, with a friendly polite staff. The sporting clays course one of the best in the country. Also the trap, skeet and five-stand fields excellent too. You will enjoy the place.

Great facility but the staff could use some lessons in customer relations. Seems like we have a hassle every time we shoot here. Bottom line: great course, weak staff.

I love this Range, its a nice place to go year round and the 25, 50, and 100 yard shooting zones helps out a lot and its never over crowded and the over the top gun people tend to miss this place. It's a real big state park thats happens to be very nice, you can go to next door with the family and Cook off a few while the BBQ cooks and the old girl will never know unless someone slips up.

Apparently, the surrounding residences (who moved in knowing the shooting club was there)found the gunshots to be unsettling and complained. As a result, the club has constructed enclosed shooting stations (insulated walls to follow) to help curb the sound. The club is well managed, and the presentations challenge all levels. The club house is relatively new, the people are great but most of all the shooting was fun. Thanks for a great time.
