I was out there last Saturday for a bachelor event, and can't say enough about the place and our instructor, Luigi Gaglione. Not only did Luigi have our group of brand new to novice shooters breaking clays consistently by the end of our lesson, but there may not be a more friendly and competent teacher out there. It's one thing to be a great guy (he certainly is), and quite another to combine that with great teaching which he absolutely did. My cousin was referring to him as the "Shotgun Whisperer" for the rest of the evening, and there wasn't a man among us who had a problem with that. Great time and can't wait to get out there again.

The Pacific Rod and Gun Club has been in continuous operation on the same site since 1928, overlooking Lake Merced and situated between the Olympic and Harding Park golf courses. One of the prettiest settings for shotgun sports in the nation. There are 3 trap fields, including wobble and doubles. Six (6) skeet fields, with one skeet field set up for international skeet. The five stand and duck tower are currently under renovation.
Membership is reasonable. Shotguns for loan or rental are not available for non-members. Lessons for skeet and trap are available with advance notice. The $50 fee includes the use of a shotgun, 50 rounds of ammunition and expert instruction on the game of your choice. You will be breaking targets before your lesson is over.
I was a novice when I started at this club. You will find the membership to be warm, open and extremely supportive of the sport and your interest. Management and members are always willing to make your visit a happy and productive experience. It may seem unfair, but the membership doesn't tolerate any lapse in sportsmanship or gun safety. If you are unsure how your gun works or the rules, a member will be happy to assist.
There is no sporting clays field and no alcohol is sold at the club.
For those interested in reloading, the club offers bulk steel shot in #7 and #8 sizes. The club sells steel shot ammunition in 12, 20, 28 and .410. The use of lead shot is strictly prohibited.

I finally got a shotgun that will handle steel shot, so last weekend I headed over to shoot some skeet. I had a great time. It was expensive at $10 for a round, plus $10 for a box of approved shells (cheaper for members and bringing your own steel ammo of course). The other shooters there were so friendly and welcoming I felt right at home. It felt like I had stepped back in time 30 years! Well worth a visit, and I'm thinking about joining too.

I was disappointed in my visit to this club. I was traveling on business and did not have my shotgun. The club did not have rental guns, and the management made no effort to help me find someone to shoot with, or a loaner gun.

I joined my brother for a week of shooting in and around San Francisco from England. At the Pacific Rod and Gun the members were all extremely welcoming and really were keen to share their enthusiasm for skeet and trap shooting - two disciplines I am now a convert to (from the UK sporting clays).
A truly great club with excellent scenery, hospitable members and dollar beers !
I can't wait for next year !

Located across Harding Lake from San Francisco's Harding Golf Course, the Pacific Rod and Gun Club is the oldest continuously operating gun club in California. More to the point, it's close, friendly and welcomes new visitors. With one trap and three skeet ranges, as well as a sporting clay course (limited), it's an unbelievable find within eight miles of downtown San Francisco.
The club is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday 11-4, and sells ammunition (pending the court challenges to San Francisco's recently passed gun and ammo ordinance.) Most importantly, the membership welcomes new shooters, whether visitors to SF or locals who want to take up a new sport.
