Michael D. New Orleans, LA Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 12/05/2011 | I knew very little about this place when I drove out there. As I pulled up, I saw a gentleman getting his shotgun out of the back of his car and introduced myself. Said I had found one little listing on the internet for a skeet range and was looking for a place to shoot. He said "Well, you found it. I'm Terry. Wanna go shoot?". And just like that we grabbed another member and went to it.
I've been twice so far and had two good experiences. The people are overall very nice. Even the gruff good-old boys were friendly and helpful once I gave them a few minutes. The ranges and clubhouse are in pretty good shape, and the members obviously look after the place.
Membership is reasonable and rates are good, both for members and non-members. I only shoot skeet, but they've got trap as well, and voice-activated pulls for both if need-be.
The biggest thing I noticed was the free instruction. Everyone seems to shoot together, from the old salts to the new guys, and the old salts were constantly giving me tips and trying to help me improve my game. They're happy to talk about their guns and more than one insisted I borrow or try some of their equipment to see what I liked.
I'm definitely going to become a member and get involved. They are currently between managers, so the club president and other members are running the joint. If you're looking for a nice, clean, inexpensive skeet and trap club, I highly recommend you check this place out. |
Joe Valiente Metairie Louisisana Visitor 2-5 Visits Reviewed 01/24/2011 | I was a first time skeet shooter and I found the facility clean and the equipment in excellent working order.
I noticed that the club members I came in contact with were friendly and eager to give constructive advice and encouragement.
Finally the club manager,Paul, former skeet world champion, was about as patient and eager to help type of person one will run across. with.
This skeet/trap club is worth a visit. |
Guido Eschete Houma Visitor 6-10 Visits Reviewed 01/24/2011 | SLGC was an experience that i will not inflict on myself or my son again. The manager was rude and inconsiderate of the customer. My mother and father shot at SLGC for years when it was managed by Art Carmier. it was a large part of my youth, i would have liked to bring my son there on a regular basis but Hunters Run In Baton Rouge is where we will be headed from now on. J.D. "FLAP" Eschete would be ashamed of the attitude that is being portrayed in the sport of Skeet today. |
Andrew Ruhs New Orleans Visitor More than 10 visits Reviewed 11/21/2010 | Foremost, the club is clean, friendly, and safe. The members, although they may be cold at first, are knowledgeable and otherwise a diverse and great group of people. I just began shooting, and in part because of the club, I now not only feel comfortable within the sport but I am sure to continue in the shooting. I couldn't applaud this club enough. |
Daniel New Orleans, LA Member More than 10 visits Reviewed 06/01/2009 | I've been a member of this gun club for a few months now and my shooting has been nothing but better because of it. I was impressed on my first visit by the hospitality of the members and their eagerness to invite a novice shooter to join their squad for the afternoon. Since then, I have taken advantage of the world class instruction offered at the club, and my scores have improved significantly. Though it is open to the public, this is a members oriented club with exceptionally reasonable membership fees and shooting fees, and is well worth joining.
By the way, the Blanche Drive address listed is not the location of the club. The physical location does not have an address, but it is easy to find on hwy 541 (river road in avondale, la) just north of hwy. 18, right near the avondale shipyard, and not far from the Huey P. Long bridge. |
B, Robinson Pretoria South Africa Visitor Once Reviewed 07/22/2008 | This facility is on the edge of a large shipbuilding facility and takes about 35 minutes to reach from the French Quarter. The range was well kept but the person staffing it was not helpful and was essentially rude and unwelcoming to this visitor. His abrupt and abrasive nature was not the southern hospitality I had come to expect in Louisiana. I was not made to feel welcome and I got the impression I was just a stranger who forced him get off the couch and leave the TV to do his job. I will not visit this location again. |
Douglas Bergeron Luling La Visitor Once Reviewed 06/27/2008 | I drove up today for the first time not knowing what to expect. A group of three customers took me under their wing and showed me the ropes and made me feel right at home in 5 minutes. Later I was shooting by myself with a voice controlled launcher and the staff came out to teach me some pointers. It was`a great experience and I will be back soon. I think I have a new hobby! |
Ursin Abbate Norco , LA. Visitor Once Reviewed 08/05/2007 | Been looking for a place to shoot skeet since the Bonnet Carre Spillway does not allow target practice. Heard about the gun club from a friend and just drove up to the place and the people were very welcoming. Awesome facility with the friendly southern warmth of the people that the Louisiana is known for. Thanks! We will be back! |
Chris White New Orleans, LA Visitor Once Reviewed 12/30/2005 | First time visitor with my two sons. Greeted warmly and felt welcome. Paul took the time to show us the course and talk about the "how to's" of skeet shooting. Nice facility with plenty of room. We all enjoyed the visit and plan to return. |
Edgar Walker Harvey, Louisiana Member More than 10 visits Reviewed on or prior to 11/20/2005 | Whether you are a seasoned or novice shooter, South Louisiana Gun Club is great place for shot-gunners to spend an afternoon and enjoy a few rounds of skeet or trap. The staff and Members always make you feel right at home. The grounds and equipment are neat and well maintained. No matter how good or bad of a shot you are, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon. So, whether you live in the New Orleans area or just visiting, SLGC is worth a visit. |
Dward Thomas Terrytown,La. Member More than 10 visits Reviewed on or prior to 11/20/2005 | SLGC is an excellent shotgunners source for experienced to novice clay shooters. Private skeet lesson are offered by management and hunters education classes are scheduled annually. Wobble trap is also offered in addition to regular trap and skeet. |
