I made arrangements to visit this club as a guest of the club president over the phone. I was given directions and I headed out the next day. Finding this range was tricky. Its entrance is off a maze of dirt roads and a logging operation. I only saw it after I doubled back after being lost for about 30 minutes in some rough areas. Sure enough I drove right past it. Its not well marked. The gate was partially open so I drove in. It was a well rutted dirt road. The president wasn’t there, but a fellow shooting handguns was. I drove up and introduced myself and he was quick to tell me I was on private property. When I told him the president offered I come out and see the place, he sorta backed off a bit but gave me the eye the whole time.
I got to see the layout. It didn’t take long because there was nothing there but a brand new abandoned skeet sidewalk never finished. No one was there besides us and it was blazing hot. He told me the skeet side of the club began building the range without any insight. They ended up abandoning it when they realized shooting the shot would cross over people on the pistol and rifle ranges going downrange to check targets. It was a classic left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing. So they quit. Instead, they set up a portable trap machine on station 4 and they now call it 7 stand. They only shoot certain days when rifles and pistols aren’t present because its obvious shot must still cross over on the pistol and rifle ranges.
Trust me. Don’t aim for this club. Even if you find it, odds are the gate will be locked and you’ll have a defunked skeet sidewalk with no houses waiting for you. Needless to say, I wont be coming back. Don’t make this a destination range. You’ll be very disappointed. I’m only posting this write up for the others that may hear rumors that Benton has skeet and trap. They need to know the truth, they don’t.
