I called ahead and was the guest of Paul O’neil, club president. I spent a Sunday morning in a very well run, well established, authentic, true and unaffected, old fashion gun club nestled in a quiet neighborhood, since 1933. Branford is one of the few old classic new england clubs left in america that hasn’t given into new modern ‘over the top’ decor. It has a natural stone open hearth wood fireplace burning away, with a deer mounted overhead. The interior is aged from decades of great people coming and going and displays decades old photos of past members and achievements. Its like walking back in time. The feeling upon entering is like being at deer camp. The majority of members were wearing camo and muck boots and the smell of burning wood hits you when you enter. The kitchen is busy making breakfast for its members and the stove vents into the club, making seem you’re at a campfire as the cloud drifts through the cozy hall. Community and shooting is the focus of this club. In a separate house is a 15yd indoor pistol rifle range. The trap field shares a 5 stand set up so depending on what is scheduled for that day, determines the game played. The trap has voice activated releases. What an experience. I look forward to being invited back again.
