still a great place to shoot. management is installing a simple car port style shade pavilion for the skeet shooters, for those hot summer days. ever since the tornadoes took out most of the trees, it gets hot there. so this should help a lot.

range is open and busy as always. still 4.00. ag&f put all new promatic machines in all the houses and bunker. i would like to take a moment to mention that the range has lost a fine fellow. rangemaster leroy johnson died at home in his sleep after a long illness. he was my good friend and made going to mayflower a special occasion. he will be missed by many.

The recent tornado of 4/14 missed the skeet/trap range this time, but getting to the range is limited due to the vast destruction ajoining the area. there are check points everywhere. call before you attempt to visit the range.

Good news, the shotgun ranges are open again. Just dont be shocked when you see all the trees gone and damage that hasnt been repaired yet. It’ll take some time, but targets are being thrown. Come have a blast.

Mayflower took a direct tornado hit. Though they are going to rebuild, it will be closed until further notice.

Mayflower continues to improve in 2011. Thats both good and bad. Good is the fact that the shooting sports in ark. Is alive and well. Bad is that it seems be lopsided. Sometimes getting too big ruins things. I experienced this during my last visit here. Because of the high interest in trap shooting through the national shooting sports foundation youth shooting program, focus appears to be going towards strictly trap for youth. The one skeet range will be receiving a trap field overlay in mar/apr of this year, closing the skeet range for its construction. This improvement is to accommodate the increased instructions scheduled for the upcoming seasons. Unfortunately, the skeet range makes more revenue than the trap shooting; yet, another skeet range is not planned. Youth teams tend to schedule blocks of shooting in advance, which closes public trap shooting during those periods. And if the team doesn’t show or cancels, the block of time is wasted and goes unprofitable. Even worse, if the teams shows up late, they feel they still own the range for the missed time. Coaches argue to get their time on range, even though it was caused by their poor planning. A lot of public shooters are turned away if the rangemaster gives it to the coaches and it leaves the range with a bad public reputation. If the pendulum swings the other way, parents get sore when they travel to shoot but only get 15 or 20 minutes on range, when the rangemaster releases it back to public use, on time. So there is a constant feud between public use and the youth shooting program during the youth shooting season, with management directing traffic in the middle. Once both trap fields are operational and the youth shooting season opens, i expect skeet shooting to drop off due to the new trap field overlay dominating the time frames. Skeet shooters need to be made aware of this, prior to traveling long distances to shoot here. Another thing shooters coming here need to understand is the lack of planning on the ranges part. Ark. Fish and game is a huge ‘type a’ authoritarian organization. The result is a lot of power and decisions trickle down from above, and suggestions from below in the ranks are rarily considered. Like, having a spare skeet machine at the range. Trap machines are plentiful, since all leased shooting sports machines on wheels are stored there. If a trap breaks, trap can continue easily by wheeling a promatic ranger into place. But if a beomat skeet machine breaks, the range gets closed for weeks on end, while someone orders a replacement. Poor planning and logistics once again turn a lot of potential skeet income and shooting interest away. Be prepared to deal with this prior to coming. A phone call may save you a lot of headaches.

Mayflower continues to shine. Shotgun rates went up to 4.00 this july, so be advised. Minor improvements continue to make this a great place to shoot. The ark game and fish youth shooting program has for the most part commandeered the trap range for its youth shooting program on weekends, so expect to be bumped if an instructor shows up with kids. Other than that, its still a great place to shoot skeet and trap. Come by and see!

Mayflower range is a handicap friendly, clean, well established, yet brand new remodeled facility. There’s plenty of paved parking. An air-conditioned clubhouse with spotless accommodations is available to escape the elements. The range has more than skeet and trap, it has a pistol and rifle range as well. The shotgun ranges are primarily used for the instruction of new shooters.

The skeet field had a total facelift to include new, walkways, houses, and target machines. Though the high house throws its share of broken targets, the skeet range is peaceful and a perfect place for beginners to learn the game. The field doesn’t meet NSSA regulations. The stations could use painted boxes and field stakes. Maybe in time they will. Low house birds land in a pond and wind off that pond makes high house birds scream.

Though new sidewalks have been poured on the trap range, it is not ATA regulation. Because so many beginners shoot at Mayflower, management had to construct a steel plate deflector to protect the bunker from nervous shooters who let stray shots go wild. The trap field could also use yardage lines painted on the sidewalks. Other than that, the trap field throws perfect targets all the time.

Shade is limited and it gets hot in the summer. Dress accordingly. Skeet and trap fields both are button systems lacking voice release. You can’t pull your own birds, so don’t come alone. You might be waiting a long time for a fellow shooter to show. At the slightest sign of rain, the ranges are closed. Power is cut. Apparently the cords aren’t weatherproofed and have been known to shock shooters. Be prepared. You can’t beat the price at 3.00 a game, but bring your own guns and ammo. Ammo is not sold on the premise and guns are not loaned. Need a range where you can bring young shooters or your wife? Are you new to shooting? This is the place for you. Whenever I’m in Ark., I will be a regular customer here for years to come.
