I like visiting the Whittington Center. It has virtually every type of shooting range there is. About 125,000-180,000 people a year visit there depending on the economy. There are modern cabins, dorms, RV campsites, museum, gift shop and Library. The Whittington Center is soley operated on donations it is a non-profit facility. The clay target ranges are excellent. A call ahead is a good idea because of staff size. I have been a member for many years. Go there and enjoy it.

I went to the NRA Whittington Center today to shoot Sporting Clays. I called before I went and the lady I talked to was very helpful. I arrived at about 9am and the guy running the shotgun ranges, Dave, was extremely knowledgeable and is a shooter himself. I went out to shoot and the range was very clean and well arranged. All the throwers worked and I only had a couple of rabbits that broke when thrown which is not unusual. The targets were challenging and they used several towers which was a nice bonus. They have a cafeteria in the clubhouse but I didn’t eat there although it sure smelled good.
The trap, skeet, 5-stand ranges all looked equally clean and well setup although I didn’t use them.
I’ll be in the area for a couple months and will definitely shoot here again. If my observations of the club change I will post it.

I have been to the Whittington Center on two ocassions, in 2009 and October 2011. First class facility…my impression is that the shotgun sports are not the priority here. On both visits I have heard the same lame excuse about the station directions being “blown away”. Excuse me, the wind blows in the desert and when the guy who was running the shotgun clubhouse said it “was windy on Wednesday” and I’m there on Saturday with the SC station instructions blown away, I have a problem. Same issue in 2009 with the five stand signs..they were blown over.
Forget rental equipment, what they had in 2009 was a joke. This is like a government operation, money could not but better equipment but the operations are disappointing. I won’t return for shotgun sports..

Stayed at the center and shot skeet and sporting clays on 8-22-09 and 8-23-09. Ralph was very helpful, and the sporting clays course is set up well. There were no teal or chandelle targets, which was a bit surprising. There are 12 stations set, and you can pick and choose what you shoot and how. It’s nice to have antelope wander through the course while you shoot.

Do call ahead of time if you need someone to pull for you.

Have tried to shoot skeet here twice. First time, no one to run shotgun range. Second time, the shotgun people were in town. A call confirmed they would be back in 2 hours. Always call first to make reservations.
