The Sporting Clays course was been completely re-done Spring 2012. 5 automatic remote release traps have been installed and 2 different course options are offered – allowing 50 or 100 targets to be shot.

SG&R impressed me enough that I joined as a member yesterday. Prior to that have been shooting as a visitor for the past two months or so. The staff (which consists primarily of teenagers) has been polite, helpful, and accommodating. The trap and skeet fields are well maintained (and lighted for Thursday night shoots), and the members I have talked with have been friendly. I appreciate the fact that they welcome the public, as it allowed me to experience trapshooting for the first time (to which I am now hooked). It also allowed me to introduce friends who weren’t involved in the shooting sports and who now shoot with me on a regular basis.

My only complaint about SG&R is the sporting clays course. It only has a few stations and I wasn’t very fond of most of the presentations. Due to the way things are positioned, I found it hard to hear the trapper, which led to considerable confusion my first time out. I think electronic hearing protection would have done me a lot of good so I didn’t have to keep removing my over-ear protection every time I needed to listen to the trapper. They also have a second course which I have not shot yet, so perhaps it is better.

Overall I think it is a great club. I appreciated not being made to feel like an outsider despite the fact that I was a new visitor who had never even seen a trap field before.
