I have been shooting trap and skeet for many years at this facility. It is a very nice place to shoot and the people who shoot there are top notch. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about the staff. There are some very young people in charge of the place and they are not customer minded. I have overlooked the immaturity before many times as there workers race around on golf carts and have rude conversations among themselves when they can be heard by customers. Today was my worst experience ever. While 7 people were waiting to shoot trap, there was 2 employees racing golf carts, throwing garbage cans about and reparking golf carts, yes moving each one a few feet. When I event into the office to ask for another field to be opened, there was three guys inside two behind the counter stocking ammo on a shelf and one on an iPad sitting on the couch. When I asked if they had anyone to throw clays for trap. They said they were understaffed for the day. Mean while the kid on the couch must have worked there because he was cleaning guns and helped me look at a gun when I showed up initially. I run a small business and my customers are my life. When I was turned away so 2 people could stock a shelf and another surf the web, this was it for me. When the “kids” running the place get some idea about how to treat customers or the owner realizes people leave because of the immaturity and hires some responsible adults, maybe I’ll be back.

An update to my previous review because I’ve now been out on the sporting clays course. 10 stands spread throughout the woods of a county park in a semi-circular arc. Enter the course to the right of the skeet fields, hike through the woods and exit to the left of the trap fields. The terrain is absolutely flat and you travel on dirt hiking/jeep paths. The center rents golf carts but, quite frankly, you do not need one to get around the course. A gun caddy or similar cart is helpful so you don’t have to carry your gun, ammo and other supplies.
The 10 stands present a variety of targets including rabbits, fast/slow crossers and incoming birds. Plenty of variety to keep you interested. Significantly, you do not need a trapper/puller on the course. When you check in you are given a key that keeps track of your target count. A controller box at each station lets you pick either the high or low trap or both simultaneously. There is a delay feature if you are shooting solo. You pay for each target thrown and I suppose that is my only nit to pick. At one station, we saw 3 broken clays exit the trap; at another, I pushed the button 7 times and no bird appeared. I paid for those and the folks at the desk aren’t open to discussion about “no bird” situations. A minor nit considering everything else.
This is not a fancy place. The stands are very rudimentary compared to clubs upstate and there’s a fair amount of debris (shell casings and empty boxes) scattered on the ground because people don’t pick up their shells. The client base is very diverse: many serious shooters but an equal number of people trying it for the first time who may not know what they are doing. The serious shooters and regulars are very pleasant and inviting. If you are solo, there’s a good chance someone will offer to have you join their group.
As I wrote in my original review: bring your own gun! The group in front of me yesterday was sharing one rental gun among 4 people and it malfunctioned frequently, causing them to have to exchange it.
All in all, a great resource for Long Island shooters who don’t belong to a private club or don’t want to drive 2 hours upstate. At the end of the day its about the targets and the experience and this place is pretty nice.

I’ve made four visits here in the last month as I recently started shooting and this range is closer to my home then some of the places “upstate” in New York. It is a county owned park on the east end of the island bordering a residential community. The main office is pretty simple: a small seating area, toilets, sales counter and gun rental counter. Office staff were helpful and polite to this novice shooter, suggesting that I start with 5 Stand. The range has 5 Stand, Trap,Skeet and Sporting. There is a main open field and some of the attractions are back in the woods requiring a hike or cart ride.
I’ve shot at the 5 Stand, which are staffed by trappers in lifeguard-type chairs. The course is a little dilapidated, possibly because it’s a county facility and both Nassau and Suffolk counties tend not to pour resources into their parks. Shells litter the ground after a short time. Frankly, it’s not a pretty place to shoot but it’s accessible and the prices are very reasonable.
The clientele range from very experienced, helpful & encouraging people to those who seem to have no concept of firearms safety. I think this is also a consequence of it being public and accessible.
There are guns to rent but, if you can, bring your own. The range and functionality of the guns varies. I think they have only one 20g and the rest are 12g with a fair mix of semi-autos, which don’t work for me as a lefty. Twice I’ve rented and been given special instructions because something “wasn’t working properly.” And it gets crowded on the weekend, which means that there may be a wait for a rental.
If you have your own gun, live nearby and don’t need a pretty place to shoot, this facility is fine. If you’re new and don’t have a gun, I’d suggest going somewhere with more rentals and a broader range to choose from so you can get some consistency in your shooting (versus getting a different rental everytime).

Went back on Saturday Jan.2nd to use the Sporting Clay Range, and it was the most fun i have had in years. I took my son and a friend and we were out on the trail for a couple of hours. All went well and everyone was friendly! Will definitely go back again soon!

I brought my daughter for an our lesson with Tom to introduce her to the world of shotgunning on December 19th. All went exceptionally well and my daughter was very satisfied. Service and atmosphere was very friendly. I will revisit and bring the rest of my kids. I will highly recommend this place for a day of shooting!

This past weekend was my third visit in three years. Great staff, nicely kept facility, inexperienced shooters are welcome, and a nice lounge with comfortable sofas to relax in after shooting. Don’t worry about forgetting something at home, they have a well stocked store. Once again, a great experience.

Only been there a couple times. Staff has been respectful welcoming and over all awesome. Only thing I wish they had was paper targets as well. It’s pleasure to shoot there anyway. It’s affordable as well.

Always had a great time with friends and family, especially on the sporting clay course. Much prefer this site over one where employees are looking over your shoulder.

Visiting family on Long Island and took son and grandson for first time skeet shooting. Busy day but no delay getting on range. Other shooters were very patient with new shooters and helpful with tips. We will make it a point to return in the future.

I started shooting January 2012. I have NEVER had a problem shooting here. I usually shoot twice during the week and once on the weekend. The staff is incredible. Nothing but professional and extremely knowledgeable. I have taken lessons with Mike Cerce and if you are a new shooter as I am you are wasting your time without a lesson. He is an incredible instructor. In response to FRED. I have shot at a few other places and had to wait at these other places. I was at the Suffolk Clays on the day in question. It was extremely busy plus a tractor trailer came to deliver supplies. Next time you should try a place a few times before you negatively post. I probably have shot there 40 times this year and have never had a problem waiting too long to shoot. We generally all rotate in different squads or shoot a group of more than five.
Number of visits: I work there
I’m sorry that Fred didn’t enjoy shooting at STS&SC. It is not out of the norm for any range to have 3 squads rotating on a trap field. And after reading Fred’s 2009 post regarding the Long Island Shooting Range in Brookhaven, it leads me to believe that it may be hard to please some shooters all of the time. We have gone as far as running a six or seven man squad on a trap field to please all the customers, when permissible of course. But in no range nor shooting sport, do you always get a firing line or station right away, ALL OF THE TIME.
But I assure you, we do the best to please our shooters most of the time. I have a policy that the customers satisfaction and enjoyment is my number one priority. And on any given day I put our customers satisfaction before myself and my co workers personal needs.
I do believe on the date in question, not only were we having a great day at Suffolk Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. We also had a truck delivery come in LATE (10:30AM instead of 7:30AM) making us short staffed for our already busier then normal daily task. A combination of the sunny busy day and a late delivery just got the better of us.
As for Friday with 12 shooters on a trap field, that’s a normal business day on any trap field I have shot on. And I’ve shot on a few up here and in Florida.
As for skeet pullers on weekdays, we rarely have weekday skeet pullers. It has been that way for as long as I have been employed here on weekdays. Shooters are assigned to a squad and the squad pulls for themselves. And when it is busy, it is near impossible to assign any individual shooter or small group their own field. That is the norm on any shooting range.
I hope that in the future any customer with a problem will come in and see the front desk so we may resolve the problem immediately, if and when possible.
I also hope you return to enjoy all your shotgun shooting pleasures at STS&SC in the future Fred. I will do my best to move the fields along as fast as the other customers will shoot. We really do the best we can on all days to make your shooting pleasures enjoyable.
Thank you all for your business and support.

I’m a Saturday shooter. Big mistake going to range during the work week. Thursday’s no pullers for skeet and 15 shooters on one trap field. People sat in their cars and at the table watching. After some time people just left. Now its time to try Friday. This time 12 shooters on one trap field, and no pullers at all for skeet.

I went here for the first time this spring, having never shot any shotgun sports, took a lesson from Mike for a really great price and put 2 boxes of shells through my shotgun. Mike was an excellent teacher and I was getting the hang of it by the end of the lesson and very confident that I had the fundamentals down. His instruction was very clearly helping with my shooting. I have since gone back 2 or 3 times to shoot trap and everyone has been very helpful and friendly(which is rare in the shooting community). I will be going back this Friday to try my hand at the sporting clays course!

I was very fortunate to have lessons at this range by Mike, he was patient and kind. Trevor and Simran joined me in the fun. I had never shot before and enjoyed being taught and the lovely company that was with me. I recommend this range highly.

I have taken a lot of lessons over the last year and I have to say one thing; “If you have not taken a lesson with Mike Cerce in skeet, trap or sporting clays, you are not learning anything new”. Mike took me out and watched me shoot for the first 20 minutes or so, after that he began correcting the different things I was doing wrong. I considered myself a good shooter with a solid background for the shooting games. But after one lesson with Mike I consider myself 100 times better. A lot of other instructors just gave me the text book style lesson. This is not how Mike instructs, he broke down every aspect of what I was doing and explained why he wanted to change certain things. The end result was better hits on the targets and a lot less misses. He truly showed me a new way of seeing a target and as he described, attacking the bird. I will return to Mike for many more lessons in the future. Today we attack skeet maybe tomorrow we’ll learn how to attack sporting clays from Mike. My advise is if you have yet to visit Suffolk, you should get out there. A little more advise would be, don’t keep shooting okay, take a lesson with Mike Cerce and learn how to see a target and then attack it. Thanks Mike and the entire staff at Suffolk.

I’ve been going on Thursdays for the Sporting clays Thursday special. I decided to take a lesson with Tom to see if I could improve my game.
It was the best money I’ve spent on shooting! I’ve taken lots of lessons at lots of places but this was the best. Especially for the money, about half what most places charge. Tom really diagnosed my issues and gave me a plan to work on my game.
The facility was clean and the rest of the guys here are a good bunch. I’ll be back to practice and take more lessons. The course is always challenging and they change it more than most places too.

Dropped by on Thursday and got the $30 sporting clay special.
Have to admit not big on reviews, but we used Instructor Mike and
it was worth every penny. A lot of fun and I will be back.

My oldest (he’s 12) and I have started coming here in early may and always have a great time. Always. The facilities are always kept clean and the staff are always helpful and courteous which to me is a big plus. The fair prices, nice array of targets on the sporting clay course, helpful tips offered by staff and other shooters cannot be beat. I have shot at several other places in the state and while some are better than others they cannot match every positive aspect S F C has to offer. . Best regards to the folks at SFC… keep it up

I want to praise the quality of the lesson I received learning to shoot, I never thought I would hold an interest in such a sport. My sister was killed from a shotgun and it made me look wrongly upon it’s sport. Now I realize it is better to learn to handle a gun properly. I was tuned into this sport from a friend, Simran Khurana. I had watched him shoot a few times, and I must add what a terrific shooter, great attitude also. I thought upon watching this young man, I would love to learn and progress in this sport. I was given the opportunity and it is one I shall never forget. Thanks for the memories.

Well if you’ve got the winter blues this place has the cure. I went with my buddy today we opted for the “12 Station Sporting Clays” very cool we had a great time, we laughed at each station like teenagers with every shot. Very humbling at times. lol each station is totally different high, low clays, across the ground, high hanging, right angles, ect. Priced very reasonable 40 bucks for a 100 clays plus 2 pratice per station. Cant beat that with a stick. The staff is friendly, kind and ready to help at a moments notice. Figure on spending about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish, have some bottled water with you and a lite snack if you walk it. I will be going again for sure cant wait to try out the 5 stand position shooting and the high low house skeet. Thanks for a great day.

This is one of the best shooting facilities on long island and in NY for shooting clays. The range is professionally run by courteous and knowledgeable staff. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great trap, skeet, or sporting clays experience.

Hey guys,
I went to Suffolk based on the reviews I’ve read here, and I must say all the positive ones are SPOT ON. It was my first time shooting a gun PERIOD, so I opted to get a lesson from Mike to learn about basic shooting and gun safety. Mike was extremely helpful, patient, and always encouraging. Needless to say I have another lesson scheduled this week, and have already purchased a gun!. I will be making regular visits here. Prices are reasonable, its clean, simple, and the people are very friendly.
Thanks

Had my first visit today w/ my son who is a first timer @ clays and shotgunnung. Everything that was written is true. The people were beyond friendly and they encouraged and welcomed my son as if he had been shooting forever. We will be back frequently.

I have traveled 100 plus miles and I am telling you this place is awesome. The personnel and the guest are very friendly. My very first experience with a shotgun and sports clay are worth the drive. I wish I could meet the owner but as per one of the guest have mentioned, he is a real friendly person. I will be back with a nice toy.

This was my first visit to the range with my new Remington 1100. I tried out sporting clays for the first time. They sent a kid out with me for the first two stations to show me how to work the automated stations. I had a great time. The course is a mile around so I rented a golf cart. I am a marksman with a rifle..but soon found out that shotguns are another story!!! No problem..I met Tom..an instructor at the range who gave me some tips..and I plan to take some lessons from him to learn this right. This is one of the nicest range I have been to..and I am going back in a few days to take a lesson with Tom..and have another crack at the sporting clay course!!!! I think I will soon be a regular there!!!!

I would just like to say that it’s great place to spend the day shooting. I have been going there since I at least five years old to watch my father and grandfather shoot, I am now thirty-eight and my wife shoots with me and my son is getting into it too. Mark and the gang at the range welcome everyone in with open arms whether you are experienced or non experienced and also the atmosphere on the range with the other shooters is unbelievable like you have been friends for life. To me going to the Suffolk skeet range on Saturday or Sunday is tradition, keep up the good work guys see you next weekend.

Yet once again within less than 7 months, that I write this review, and for a specific purpose.
1) Folks, Take your loved ones for a “Shot” else they will never know their true potential.
2) After my son’s first exposure, after his Military Academy exposure 2 Years ago , twice, and most importantly upon his own insistence (Yes, I said what the hell is he trying to ask me to go to), I after seeing his first /second attempt, went way beyond my expectations
Instructors Tom La Prelle /Mike, as well as Dave ,Adam and Sarah (Whom we accidentally met during a siesta for us at the clay shooting fields)(Not sure, but hope it is the right name).
Simran from 7/25 has reached a peak of 23/25 successful targets within these months, and will keep you all posted after a landmark acheievement after June 12th 2009.
Again, I sometimes go the the range without our son, besides my other activities
Good Luck ALL

I went to Suffolk county trap skeet and sporting clays for the first time on this past Thurs. I thought it was going to be a boys club type of place but it wasn’t like that at all. All the guys there were very down to earth and helpful,( It may of helped that I’m a CITY cop and all of the guys there are retired city PD) but there was a instructor named Tom who basically taught my buddy and I how to shoot trap and skeet. Great place I’ll go there forever because I’m totally hooked now, can’t wait to go back and try golf with a shotgun. I FINALLY FOUND A WORTHY HOBBY!!!!!!!!!!!! I recommend this to all. Thanks to Hunter Sports and Instructor Tom.

I’m hooked!!! If your hesitating trying this sport because you’re not sure of the rules, shooting etiquette, or anything else for that matter. STOP!! This is the place to come and have the time of your life learning. I did. Everyone will go out of there way to make sure no matter what level of a shooter you are, that you have a great time. They taught me, my hunting partner and my wife. Don’t be afraid to ask for Mike or Tom for a private lesson. One lesson makes a world of difference. I work for a major sporting goods store and send ALL my customers to Suffolk Trap and Skeet. See ya there!!

Honestly, It’s been a long time time since I’ve shot at the facility. I currently shoot Trap and Sporting Clays and have recently taken instruction at Skeet. The truth be told, all the games are excellent and take my mind off the economic BS.
Hat’s off to the facility and staff…I’m a beginner but love the sport.

I first made a trip to the facility at the beginning of 2009 and have gone every weekend since. The staff is SUPER friendly and very eager to help at every turn. Like most places in New York, they have unhappy neighbors who wish they would just go away and are suing to get their way. As a fellow shooter, please spend as much time here so that they have the funds to put up a proper fight and keep this 1st class facility open for all to enjoy.
While this facility lacks some of the polish of an elegant shooting resort, it’s not designed to be such and the prices are reflective of that. In my opinion, their pricing is more than fair (even cheap for NY) and the pro-shop is always well stocked with any item a serious shooter could would realistically need. On the rare occasion one of their machines malfunctions, a simple call to the front office instantly summons one of the attendants to fix the faulty equipment.
I can’t say enough positive things about the place in general and am confident that you will feel the same way once you visit yourself. If you can’t find a game you like or nice people here, you simply cannot be satisfied.

Took my 14 1/2 year son first time after his Military Adademy last year’s summer vacation where he picked up the basics.
Tom La Salle (Instructor) along with all other pro- shop staff were professional/courteous and more than all, ENCOURAGING & PATIENT towards everyone ..especially beginners !
Looking forward to weekly practice with son, before he gets back as Staff at the Adademy in 2009.

I had the opportunity to check out the facility and I must say that it was a great experience. I brought my girlfriend on the sporting clays course and we had a blast. I am a beginner/intermediate shooter and I hit 54 of the 100 clays and wasn’t discouraged in the slightest. We were able to choose from well over a dozen rental guns to find something that fit right. Great facility and friendly staff. I highly recommend this place to shooters of all skill levels. I have the bug after going there, I will def be back.

I have visited this range twice. Both times my experiences were great and I will definitely be going back more frequently. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
The sporting clays course runs in a circular path around the range. It’s a little more than a mile around the entire course. The stations seem to be set up for a tiny bit more difficulty than other ranges, but not what I would consider unfair or frustrating to the beginner shooter.
This range has the best shotgun rental selection I have ever seen. My first visit I rented a Browning Cynergy over and under. My second visit I asked for a Beretta over and under and they handed one right over. This is a great place to rent a particular shotgun and test it out on the course before you buy.
They want you to enjoy your time here. This is the single most important aspect of any sporting venue. I can’t wait to go back!

Visited on Sunday for the first time with a group of non-shooters. The gentlemen who worked at the facility were quick to offer advice and had everyone shooting pretty well by the end. A very friendly, reasonably-priced facility with plenty of room for all shooters. We will certainly be back.

A truly excellent range, and a very friendly staff. Tom has been very helpful to me on the trap range, and he has provided me with some helpful shooting techniques. Keep up the good work!!

In response to Anthony’s review, the facilities He mentioned are World class but they also have a world class budget to fund their courses. This allows them to create many more situations[such as building towers, clearing fields and other various methods of improving courses]. Mark doesn’t have the funding of a Nemoncolin or an Orvis. Another factor is, the resorts mentioned have more amiable terrain to work with, that’s a big advantage. So there is no reason to nit-pic Mark
and his club. He throws a nice array of targets and they ARE tough, but not crazy. I have been to a few other courses and this one stacks up well[I ALWAYS shoot better at other facilities after i shoot here, it makes me better!]. Mark and his staff are the best bunch of guys I have encountered, they’ll do anything to make your shoot more enjoyable. They have a great pro shop and its the closest place to Queens possible. I couldn’t ask for more. Maybe Anthony had a bad day,but I’m sure he’ll be back. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS and I’ll be back again and again.
P.S. Mark your killing me with that long crosser on#2

I’m sorry to see a bad review posted for Suffolk Trap and Skeet. As the weekday manager I can assure all our shooters that any complaints regarding the range or our targets will be addressed by one of the employees as soon as possible. As for the targets on the sporting course, you’re right, there are some tough clays. But would it be fair to our better shooters to throw all easy targets. I enjoy shooting trap, would Mark or myself be doing anyone a justice by throwing all trap targets on the sporting course. Sure some shooters may like that, but most shooters on the sporting course want to shoot a variety of targets presented with various speeds and from many locations. And that is what you get at Suffolk Trap and Skeet, a great day of shooting. From trap and skeet to our 5 stand and sporting course.
As for the grounds, please forgive any litter that has been on the course or fields. The winds have been wreaking havoc on, not only our targets but our garbage cans as well. During the last several weeks our garbage pails that are placed at each station and field have been found throughout the property along with shooting stands getting knocked over due to the high winds. We will be sure that we get the trails and fields litter free as soon as we can. Maybe mother nature will also cooperate and calm the wind for us.
So please continue coming to Suffolk Trap and Skeet to enjoy all your clay shooting.

The idea of this section is to post a review good or bad, but i was very disappointed to read the last review. We strive as a public facility to provide the best possible shooting experience. This includes the grounds to the targets. This was the first negative I have heard and would appreciate anyone coming to me personally and discuss ways to add to the shooters enjoyment. As for the targets on the sporting clays course we try to set targets that everyone would enjoy from the beginner to the advanced tournament shooter. We always ask all shooters when they come back in if they had fun and liked the targets. We have a 12 station sporting clay course that is fully automated and shooters can chose what targets they want to shoot. We would rate the course as a 6 out of 10 in terms of difficulty, with no short windows…as can be seen from the rest of the reviews it is worth the trip and please if there is something that needs to be fixed please ask for mark and I will personally make sure everything possible is done to help make the shooting experience at Suffolk trap skeet sporting clays worth the trip….mark

This facility at best is OK. Not the best. We shoot all over the state and as a short fix its OK. Sporting Clay course needs work, grounds better kept. Sheet ranges are good.
It seems the course is set up to defeat the shooter and discourage future a shooter from coming back. This is NOT a world class facility, anyone who classifies it as world class doesn’t shoot around much. Pintail Point, Orvis Sandanona Nemicolin-World Class
Sorry! Thats the way it is.
Regardless we still go back.

What a super nice group of people and a great sporting clays course. Be prepared for some really hot birds with awesome presentations. Don’t blink or you’ll miss the shot. Lets support these guys and make sure nobody closes them down again as do do so would be a terrible loss to our shooting community.

My family of 5 plus 2 grandparents had a FANTASTIC time on Father’s day. Many of us were total beginners, but our instructor Tom was excellent at explaining things and even got me shooting – and hitting! I would recommend this sport and this facility to anyone who wants to try something fun and different. The facilities were new and clean and they have everything you could possibly need. 5 stars:)

Everyone who shoots has to try this place, you’ll be addicted after one round of sporting clays. But most of all we have to support Mark in his battle against the community. I’m sure I’m speaking for all of the lovers of this place, that we are ready to do whatever it takes to help.
Thanks Mark and good luck!

This is a real world class facility; they have all the most popular clay shooting sports in the same location. Excellent customer service from the moment you step into the office; they have a great assortment of Beretta products, fantastic ammo selection and outstanding rental guns.
I took my wife and she received her first skeet lesson and enjoyed it very much. John her instructor was very patient and was able to keep her from giving up.
We will definitely be coming back to this great place!

I am so happy to finally have a real Sporting Clays facility near me. Every time I am there Mark treats me like I am a Somebody. They try to change presentations whenever possible. All the traps work and they are really concerned about your feedback.
I was shooting there with my friends and family, and my son was in the group in front of mine. His gun seemed to have broken… By the time I got there a range employee had already helped him and got him and his group on their way. He didn’t expect anything in return. He also saved my son from breaking his gun and a having a costly repair bill. I found the guy later and thanked him.
All in all, it is a family place that has a wide range of targets (yes rabbits too) and it is reasonably priced.
I will be a regular there.

Super friendly people that work and shoot there. I’ve been a hunter a long time but I am new to clay target shooting. They make you feel right at home there. Besides the great feeling you get just by being there, the facility is great. Great working machines. Clean Courses. The shop and clubhouse are nice too. I will be shooting there quite often.

Finally got out to shoot the clays course at Suffolk yesterday. My first visit. 12 stands on the course with really interesting presentations. Super nice staff. Good pro shop with lot’s of ammo in every possible combo of shot size and load. I was glad to find Fiocchi 1 oz 1200fps. I’ll definitely be back and would recommend we all get out there to shoot and support these guys. They’ve had a rough go with the community.
