After some years of shooting sporting clays I suddenly developed some problems. I contacted Andy Tubb at The Glorious Twelfth, and he said he could help me. I took a class with him today, and I was delighted with his instruction. He had me shooting much better within the first 10-15 minutes! I will, of course, need to practice and try to follow his advice and instruction on my own in the next few weeks/months, but he both explained and demonstrated different approaches to correcting my problem. I hope to practice for some period of time, and then perhaps return for a follow up! Well worth the effort to visit him and benefit from his excellent teaching.

As a trap shooter and relatively new to sporting clays, I decided to take a lesson from Andy at The Glorious Twelfth and was not disappointed. Upon arrival at his facility, Andy first looked at my gun, my gun fitting, and my stance to give me the best chance of doing things correctly from those standpoints before ever firing a shot. We then went to his range where he presented me with some different targets and based on his initial observation of me shooting, he had the ability to tailor my lesson to what he saw as areas I could improve. His equipment allowed him to give me any presentation imaginable and his observations, comments, and recommendations paid dividends almost immediately. I definitely improved in the short hour he spent with me and I look forward to putting his coaching into practice and returning for another lesson. Pete

I first visited The Glorious Twelfth in 2007 as a beginner in the sport of English Sporting Clays. During 2008 I took lessons from multiple coaches in Maine, Connecticut, Vermont and Minnesota trying to improve my skills. However, during 2009 & 2010, I had the opportunity to revisit The Glorious Twelfth for individual lessons and my shooting skills increased dramatically with the help and coaching of My now great friend and coach Mr. Andrew Tubb. I am now a regular at The Glorious Twelfth.

Andy’s hands on approach and quite demeanor with his students either in a group or with individual lessons is always both encouraging and fun. I can’t imagine going anywhere else for lessons and/or tune-ups after a bit of time off from shooting.

The Glorious Twelfth’s facilities and trap setup offer just about any shot that one might encounter either in the field or competition which allows Andy to work with his students on any shot that they maybe having difficulty with.

I am also so impressed with Andy and his wife’s dedication to WOUNDED WARRIORS as they sponsor an annual shooting day for the program where the entire proceeds of the day are donated to the program. All costs associated with the program i.e. use of the facility and food etc. for the attendees are donated by The Glorious Twelfth as well.

The Glorious Twelfth with Andy and Becky Tubb as your hosts is a must visit for shotgun shooters of all ages and skills.

I should have done this review 6 uears ago when i started getting instruction from Andy.

The first time I went to the club, was 6 years ago, we were new to the area, and heard about a fund raiser that was being held here, so my wife and I went, mostly to meet people, but also because I said, “What in the world are/is sporting clays?”

Well that first time, I broke I believe 3 out of 50.

But, I thought, I would like to do this, and my wife wanted to try too. So we went back to Andy for a lesson. Well since that first time, we have been back many times. Both of us improved dramatically.

Andy is a former Royal Marine Commando, and followed that with a career as a firearms instructor with the City of London police. He did an exchange as an instructor with the FBI Academy, and he and his wife Becky decided to relocate to teh Shenandoah Valley to pursue his passion for teaching people how to shoot sporting clays.

After his instruction, my wife, who had never held a gun of any sort, and I, who hadn’t shot a shotgun since 1965 or 1966 both found a new passion. We joined the Homestead, in Hot Springs, VA, just so we could shoot a great course, and also shoot local ranges all we can.

Recently, I had to have rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder, and was unable to shoot for almost a year. The first thing I did when able to hold a shotgun was go back to Andy for help. he worked with me on my hold, and my follow-thru to get me back out on the course.

Andy is fun to be with. I love is dry British humor, and I cherish both he and his wife Becky as friends.

I spent 30 years on active duty in the Army and have been shootng more years than that. I had 5 hours of instruction, firing 500 rounds under Andy Tubb’s tutelage. He is the best shooting instructor I have ever encounted. A true professional and very pleasant in his instruction and explainations. I rank him with “the best of the best”

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Glorious Twelfth and having a lesson with Andy. First, I must say that the facilities are fantastic and the scenery breathtaking. The clubhouse was very welcoming and well equipped for individuals or groups.

Andy is a first-rate instructor — he is quite knowledgeable and clearly a natural-born teacher. He has endless patience and I’m quite sure could improve anyone’s shooting skills dramatically within a few hours or lessons.

I was very impressed with his clay throwing technology as well. I’ve shot clays all around the world and never seen anything like it. Within a relatively small area, one can shoot any conceivable angle, height or combination. This really cuts down on the time it normally takes going from station to station. Truly remarkable!

In the near future I plan to return and continue to refine my shotgun skills with Andy — perhaps even bringing a group along to share the fun.

We spent 2 hours with Andy with a cousin and friend who take lessons. My husband is a hunter, I have shot twice before. He is a very gentle and intuitive instructor. I felt very comfortable, was having good success and my husband got some very helpful tips to improve his shooting.
What a lovely blue sky day in Virginia and Andy was positive, patient and gracious.
    Thank you.

Very fine instruction. Helped cure a number of my faults and now all I have to do is practice, practice, practice. I hope to return in the Fall and would do so often if not for the distance.

I suppose I may have been among one Andy Tubb’s original clients from the opening of his Glorious Twelfth Sporting Clays operation. I am a retired teacher, therefor I know good and bad teaching styles when I see them. I have grown up from my earliest recollections on various shooting ranges with my grandfather and father. As I read the reviews submitted by other happy clients, I could only echo what they say from their pleasant experiences as being what I first noticed in Andy’s excellent coaching style years ago when I first met him. I’ve run into many shooting coaches from Marine Corps Aviators to US Navy Rifle Team, and Olympic Class Shooters….Of all of them though, I’ve enjoyed Andy’s style and technique the best. He is the best shotgun shooting coach I’ve ever met, bar none…That’s why I”ll keep coming back.

I just finished my first lesson under Andy’s tutelage. I came away with an eagerness for more. The setting is relaxed, the facility is first class, and Andy knows what he is talking about. I’m glad to have gotten off on the right foot and will definitely be back for continued training and fun.

Once you experience The Glorious Twelfth, you will certainly want to return again and again…I know I did. My first visit, I arrived a bit timid, not knowing just what to expect. What a delight. The atmosphere is at once relaxing even as one navigates up the drive way, past the beautiful horses grazing peacefully in their pastures. The club house is a lovely facility hosting cold beverages, hot tea or coffee, and indoor bathroom facilities, so important to us “girls”! I have attended group shooting events, as well as private lessons, and I have never had anything short of a fantastic time. It is a real treat to just take a little time for myself, and think about nothing but blowing up those clays! My only regret is that I cannot return on a more frequent basis. Andy Tubb, dubbed The Professor, by some of his students, is such a patient and kind instructor, one can’t help but gain confidence in ones developing skill level. Give it a try…I guarantee it will be a BLAST!

On 1 May, The Glorious Twelfth sponsored perhaps the finest shooting fund raiser I have attended in support of Virginia’s wounded warriors. Andy and his wife Becky donated their facility to host a multi-Service benefit shoot. Teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard competed for the top score. Andy personally worked with each shooter to provide shooting tips tailored to each shooter’s abilities. Becky worked long and hard to serve delicious and hearty classic English dishes to provide nourishment to parched and famished shooters.

Units from local Army Reserve units provided antique military vehicles and served as scorers for the event. The food, the camaraderie, and the absolutely superb shooting at The Glorious Twelfth combined to raise many thousands of dollars to benefit wounded veterans from all services.

Andy and Becky Tubb’s The Glorious Twelfth is a marvelous dedicated shooting instructional facility offering tailored superb individual and group shooting instruction to Virginia shooters. It has also provided outstanding support to the United States Armed Forces and returning veterans. They deserve the gratitude of the community and a hearty “well done” for their efforts. My thanks to you both.

I have been shooting Sporting Clays for approx. 20 years and I have never found a better trainer and training facility than Andy Tubb and his THE GLORIOUS TWELFTH facility. Andy’s teaching skills, directions and patience have improved my shooting skills beyond my wildest expectations. I recently attended the Glorious Twelfth’s hosted and MOAA’s sponsored, U.S military Wounded Warriors Program charity benefit and Sporting Clay shooting event. My wife and I were totally charmed by Andy, his wife Becky and the whole cast of volunteers that Becky and Andy had assembled to host and provide for the event. The food was great, the comradeship exceptional and shooting was outstanding. Hats off and a great big SALUTE to The Glorious Twelfth for hosting the event.

MOAA could not have found better partners and hosts for the WWP charitable benefit event.

I have had two lessons with Andy and both were great. Andy is simply a terrific teacher. To give you an example, about midway through the first lesson I found myself missing target after target as a result of making the same error. Unlike me, Andy showed no frustration. When I finally “got it” and broke the clay, he was as excited as I was. After a couple of rewarding shots to lock in what I had seen, he changed the targets around and forced me to learn something completely new. He never allowed me to get “fixed” in a shot. When that shot was accomplished, it was on to another. Andy managed this with a combination of humor and information. It was just a real pleasure having him guide me through the process. I’ll go back many times.

The Glorious Twelfth is a fine, well-maintained, versatile, and technically-excellent shooting facility in a beautiful setting. Andy Tubb, the owner and instructor, is highly knowledgeable, skilled, respectful of everyone, and good humored. It always is a pleasure to shoot there and receive Andy’s advice, not only about the process of shooting, but also about related matters, and sometimes life in general. I have been there on many occasions and have observed Andy working with people of all ages and levels of skill, all of whom enjoyed being there and working with him. Highly recommended!

What a wonderful experience! Women shooters aren’t always taken seriously by instructors. Not so, at the Glorious Twelfth. Andy Tubb is challenging, intelligent and relational as he reframes bad shooting habits and helps to create a different understanding of wing-shooting and sporting clays. It helps that the environment is beautiful and the set-up allows immediate adjustment without changing stations. But Andy’s humor and gift for teaching would be worth the trip regardless of the setting. We plan to go back frequently. Ladies, you can’t go wrong here.

Andy is the man! I am a beginner-level shooter, spent two hours with Andy and by the end of the day was a member of the 70 yrd. club!

Andy is EXTREMELY knowledgable, easy-going, and a great teacher. I would recommend the Glorious Twelfth to any level shooter who wants to learn how to get better and have a great time. I will be back often.

    Thanks Andy!

A few years ago while working on a project in Virginia, some colleagues and I discovered The Glorious Twelfth and it has truly been a great experience. The owners, Andy & Becky Tubb, are as gracious and engaging as they are experienced in their crafts. Andy is a certified shooting instructor and truly an excellent coach.
Although I always felt I was a better than average shooter, Andy has taught me a great deal and improved my shooting to a higher level. Andy actually had me shooting targets at 50 to 75 yards with a 20 gauge, a feat which I would have never believed possible! We have visited Andy many times in the past few years and I would recommend him to any level of shooter. In the past year Andy has coached my son to now being a higher level shooter and coached my wife, a first time shooter. Both had a great deal of fun and now shoot more often because of the positive experience.
Andy has his range setup so that your group is always the only shooting group on the range and you will always get one-on-one coaching. The fees are very reasonable, the setting is beautiful and the experience is terrific.

There are many instructors that teach at public and private ranges, but to my knowledge, this is the only genuine shotgun shooting school in the U.S. For those that live close to the school or are visiting in the area, it is a real treat to shoot there. All of the traps (5) are on servo’s that allow Andy (the owner and certified British Sporting Clays Instructor) to dial up an infinte assortment of target presentations, so the shooting can be fast paced if you just want to crush targets, or you can take a more leasurly pace and shoot, chat, and learn while enjoying the beautiful Virginia landscape.

I believe by reservation that you can shoot clays without instruction at the Glorious 12th, but the real hallmark of a day at the Glorious 12th is solid instruction that is tailored to addressing your personal needs and goals. For me that is working on long crossing targets. Having an opportunity to shoot an assortment of crossing targets at 45, 55, and yes, even 65 yards (and beyond) is something you can’t do too many places, so I definitely find my time at the G12th both enjoyable and rewarding.

I highly recommend that you give it a try when you can!

We visited The Glorious Twelfth 15/16th Aug ’08 as a group of 5 friends that wing shoot regularly together to get a “tune” up ahead of the forthcoming season. The shooting grounds are nestled in some beautiful rolling VA countryside, close to historic Lexington VA. Andy Tubb, the owner and coach greeted us and took a look at our gun-fit, adding some temporary pad’s to our guns if he could see the need to adjust. Once out on the course we rotated individual instruction using a good variety of radio controlled elevated throwers, finishing the day with some fun competitive games. Andy has a very easy going and humorous manner. His coaching was very insightful and easy to follow and we all left shooting better with a clear understanding of what we were supposed to be doing in the field! The facility was immaculate and Andy’s coaching was superb- we will be back.

Located in Virginia’s picturesque Shenandoah mountains not far from Staunton, The Glorious Twelfth is a superb shotgun instruction school for the serious clays shooter and upland game hunter. Andy Tubb’s relaxed style of instruction combined with his keen powers of observation, cogent insights, and extreme patience make a visit to the Glorious Twelfth a delightful experience — one with which novice to advanced shooters can make immediate and significant improvements to their technique. I heartily recommend the school.

Andy is a fantastic instructor! His method of teaching works wonders not only on sporting clays but also for hunting. He teaches you that you can make those long shots, hit the pheasant coming overhead, and also get the bird that’s flying down fast to cover. If you want to learn shotgun shooting and learn it right then this is place for you. Plus, he’s a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor.

Andy helped my wife and me get started in Sporting Clays. His patient and kind instructional techniques helped us beginners feel safe and comfortable. We took my Father and both our sons to Andy in the following months, and all of us recommend The Glorious Twelfth as the best place in Central Virginia to learn and improve. You will be made welcome in the log cabin lodge. Visit soon and often.

I have had the pleasure to enjoy several visits to The Glorious Twelfth during the past three years, and can almost guarantee that anyone, of any shooting skill, a most enjoyable & productive time! The owner & coach, Andy Tubb, is a superb instructor, focusing on the student/client during your time there with him. Add his humor to the experience, and that “almost guarantee” notches up significantly. I got started with a birthday gift from my wife, and I was hooked right away. We have given gift certificates to others and all have thoroughly been pleased. I always look forward to making the drive to visit with him.

Comments from a late-in-life newcomer to the shotgunning world:
Having learned of The Glorious Twelfth and Mr Andy Tubb in a recent newspaper article, I made contact and have been spending Thursday mornings adding to the mineral content of Virginia’s soil under the tutelage of Mr Tubb. He first asked me what my aim was, and we agreed that a firm grounding in the basics was the best start point before focusing on trap, skeet, sporting clays, or field shooting. Given 30 years exposure to military rifle and handgun work and admittedly being a slow learner, I present something of a challenge to any shotgun coach. Yet I believe I am making progress, due entirely to Andy’s skill as a shotgun fitter and teacher/trainer, his calm flexibility(not to mention sense of humor) in coping with the idiosyncrasies of his student, and his progressive yet reinforcing coaching technique. During the alloted time, his full attention is on his student. The coaching field is well laid out and he uses it to full advantage. The field is in a forested setting that is both beautiful and devoid of distraction. There is an adjacent sporting clays course but I have not yet progressed to the point where I have fired it. In sum, I have found a great retirement avocation upon which to devote my attention as well as a first class professional to steer my efforts. I would( and have so done) heartily recommend Andy Tubb and The Glorious Twelfth to other old dogs seeking to learn new shooting tricks.

My husband and I spent two hours with Andy. He is a terrific instructor. I have not shot before and it has been years for my husband. He is a very good teacher, great with beginners and advanced students, very patient, and has a wonderful sense of humor. What is so special about the range is the ability to offer an incredible variety of targets given the five or six machines all which can vary the height and direction of the clay. He can make the experience as difficult as possible. And Andy will push you.

It was a delightful two hours and I would highly recommend Andy and his facility to any one who shoots.
