I’m an experienced shooter, but have never really tried skeet/trap. Went on a whim to give it a try. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. I’m totally hooked can’t wait to go back again.

I took my family shooting yesterday and had a great time with Micheal assisting us on the practice trap range. I had a malfunction with my trigger assembly and Jordan and Anthony were very knowledgeable and super helpful. I can’t say enough about Thunder Mountain and highly recommend them to all shooting enthusiasts.

Thunder Mountain is a great place for both first-time shooters and seasoned regulars. They have an extremely safe environment with friendly and helpful staff. The trap and skeet stations are great – and so are the prices. I was even able to buy a shotgun through them at a nicely discounted price. I look forward to many years of shooting at Thunder Mountain and am thankful they’re so close to NYC.

We have been to Thunder Mountain three times over the last month and every time we have a fun experience. We are novice shooters, and shoot like novices, but the staff is patient and helpful. They give practical advice but are not pushy or overbearing in any way. Hope to be back there this weekend.

I went to Thunder Mountain with my family and I have never gone shooting before and I was extremely nervous. The employee who was ‘handling’ my family was EXCEPTIONALLY nice and patient and made the whole trip that much more enjoyable. He also gave really easy tips on how to shoot and I can now keep up with the rest of my family.
This trip was amazing, due to their amazing customer service

My son and I were really pleasantly surprised when we went to shoot skeet at Thunder Mountain last week. We shoot regularly at a seasonal private club on Long Island and used to shoot at Dover Furnace in Dover Plains, NY, until it closed last year. We thought we’d try Thunder Mountain to increase our shooting options. Rob and Lisa Landberg could not have been more pleasant and welcoming. The skeet field was terrific and the machines functioned without any problems. Our puller Chris did a great job. We look forward to going back very soon and highly recommend it to anyone seriously interested in clay target shooting.

A wonderful experience!! Our family was very pleased with what a great day we had. A shout out to “Stephen” our instructor who took the time and care to teach myself and my teenage children all we needed to know. He was very patient and knowledgeable. Thank you Stephen! Thank you Thunder Mountain. We will be back 🙂

I wanted to take few minutes and chime in on what a great experience I have had with Thunder Mountain. After a long hiatus from shooting sports they have made it real pleasure to get back after it. I even shot skeet for the first time ever today and Craig was very patient and informative and now I am addicted. I will be back for sure with friends.

    Best,

On a couple of rare occasions when there are not planned activities on the home front, we took a spur of the moment ride to exercise our hand/eye coordination. The owners of Thunder Mountain have made us feel welcome and the staff are very safety conscious. Most of all, they make it a very fun experience.

Visited Thunder Mountain in September 2015. We met up with family for an afternoon of shooting. We were very impressed by the knowledge of the instructor (one of our party was new to shooting trap), the friendliness of the staff, and the merchandise available for sale.

We would recommend Thunder Mountain for the beginner and seasoned shooter!

The recent price increases over the last year are unjustified. Although the price increased, there is no upgrading of the facility. Same old gun racks and same old shell piles all over the place. Garbage cans are seldom emptied. At fourteen dollars a round, up from nine dollars just a year ago, you would think that there would be some major improvements to the aging facility. I have been shooting in a Ducks Unlimited trap and skeet league at Thunder Mountain for five years and have not seen any improvements, not even new coats of paint. The new price has caused me to go else where to shoot. Sorry Thunder Mountain you just lost a good customer.

I went to thunder mountain. had not been there in years. I was not there to shoot. just there for a transfer. nics check took for ever. not fault of the staff……while I was there I spoke with several employees and they were all very nice. I think I need to dust off my skeet gun (which was bought at thunder mountain from rob’s mom)and get back into this game. thanks

My son and I are new to trap and skeet shooting. We have found Thunder Mountain to be a great place to go. First, they are able to order any gun at a great price. The entire staff has a lot of knowledge about the equipment and how to shoot. But more importantly, Rob and Lisa, their entire family and staff are great and make you feel right at home.

I have been shooting at Thunder Mt. For over 15 years and have always supported them. However with the most recent price increase for 2016 up from $9.00 per round to $10.75 per round / a 19.44% increase. You would think the owners would put some money back into upgrading the facility and trap houses. In short I will not be coming back or endorsing the club.

This was my first time visiting Thunder Mountain and frankly my first time shooting shotguns. I was a bit intimidated going into it but that proved to be a silly feeling.

The staff at Thunder Mountain were, to a person, incredibly friendly! From the nice woman at the counter to the instructors who taught us to shoot skeet and then trap shooting, everyone was patient and friendly. Not once did I feel stupid for missing (got 18 out of 25 on the skeet! any shots.

The instructors (Jeremy) were great! He gave us pointers beforehand regarding safety and technique and gave us tips while we were shooting which actually improved our scores.

The price shocked me – it was much lower than I expected. For $47,50, you get a shotgun and 25 shells (we chose 12 gauge). I walked in expecting to spend a lot more. We had so much fun that we paid for an extra 25 shells!

You start with skeet shooting which launches the orange disks up and straight ahead to get the feel of the gun. Once you shoot 25 times there, you move to the trap shooting which is more difficult. There are five stations and you shoot 5 times at each one. The orange disks shoot straight or left or right which makes it harder and thus more fun!

My friend and I drove from NYC so it was a quick drive and easy to find. We had a really fun time and recommend this place to anyone who like us wanted to shoot for the first time.

You’ll have a blast at Thunder Mountain!

    Dear Robert and Lisa:

I’m writing to inform you of the excellent experience my Scout Troop had at Thunder Mountain. We come to the range to shoot annually and this year’s experience was as good as any other time. The staff is always very friendly to both the scouts and the adults. Lorrie has constantly shown great patience in giving instruction and helping the young scouts do their best at the practice range. They usually arrive nervous and leave with smiles, pride and self-confidence. We will not hesitate to bring the Scouts again next year.

    Sincerely,

    Phil

My son and I started shooting at Thunder Mt. A few months ago.
The facility is atop a mountain near Sterling Lake, NJ.
I found the owners and instructors very knowledgable and friendly.
I plan on getting my permit and continue skeet through the winter with my son.
I’ve seen young and old, guys and gals shooting and having fun.
We love shooting and owe so much to our first instructor, Jason.
An excellent teacher and asset to the facility.

I recently had a terrible experience at thunder mountain. I have been frequenting the range for a couple of years now. On my last visit I was treated so rudely by the owner that I turned around and left without even shooting. I basically was insulted by the owner for having brought my own shells (and shotgun) and then asking to borrow a shell bag. I was told to go ask the store where I bought my shells to borrow a bag! I didn’t understand his unnecessary rudeness as Thunder Mountain typically lends bags to anyone who needs one. At $9 per round, it would seem that the owner shouldn’t be so desperate to sell overpriced shells and ammo bags to everyone who walks in there. I mean, raise the price of the rounds, or make it a policy that you have to buy shells there, and it would be fine. But to be petty and insult customers for doing the norm is unacceptable to me.

The range itself is in a very picturesque setting, and the equipment works as it should. All of the instructors are extremely helpful and friendly. Just watch out for the owner. All he sees is the money in your pocket and couldn’t care less about your shooting experience. Next time I’ll bring my own bag for sure. If I had other ranges nearby to visit, I’d never go back to Thunder Mountain on principal. I’ve never been so insulted in my life.

Many thanks to guys at Thunder Mountain! Brought about 6 guys up there yesterday for my buddy’s bachelor party and had a blast (no pun intended)! Everyone was extremely friendly, and unlike many ranges I’ve been to, no one was judgemental or made us feel inferior for being either first-timers or people who hadn’t shot in many years. The owner’s son Mike was an awesome guy and we actually had a great conversation with him while we waited for our instructor. The instructor himself, a funny dude named Jake, was equally as awesome, he gave us pointers, helped us with our technique, didn’t make us feel rushed, was extremely patient (even when we went back for 2 more rounds last minute) and was an all around great guy! You can’t beat the pricing at this place, and you definitely can’t beat the people who work there. I had so much fun that I’m moving MY bachelor party in April there instead of my previous plans! Thanks again guys!

I’ve been going to Thunder Mountain for many years, and strongly recommend it to everyone.

It’s where I honed my skeet skills and where my kids learned theirs. I’ve taken non-shooting family members and co-workers there to introduce them to the shotgun sports …. they all loved it, and were breaking clay targets in no time at the “practice trap.”

    Great atmosphere and great people.

I’ve been shooting there for over 25 years. more then 10 times, how about 100’s of times. Anyone reading this review must get in your car and go. If you do not have a great time then you are comatose or just don’t like a challenge. Either you shoot against your friends or yourself you will have a blast.

I went once with my son and we had a great time and really liked the place. Rob and the family do a great job here and he is a super person. By my fourth trip I had purchased a Beretta shotgun from him and we couldn’t be happier. Casey, Jeremy and the other guides we have had have been terrific. The people we have met while shooting have also been some of the nicest you will find anywhere, giving us tips, stories, support and even offering to let us try their guns. Overall a fantastic experience. We will be back.

I brought my 2 sons (ages 22 and 19) to shoot trap the day after Thanksgiving and we had a great time. We were all relatively new to the sport and found the instructors to be quite helpful. It is also a scenic spot. Due to my confusion with the process I inadvertently paid for 4 rounds, while only shooting 3 and only discovered this when I returned home. I spoke with the owner, Rob Landberg, and he quickly agreed to credit me for the additional round on our next visit. A friendly, proficient and honest operation.

This place was fantastic. My dad and I went shooting for the day and we had a ball. Trap, skeet, modern skeet they got it. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone. I live for the DAYs like the one I had at Thunder Mountain, last Sunday.

I enjoy skeet/trap shooting, but when I get the opportunity to shoot with great people, like those that are frequent visitors of Thunder Mountain…

The best way to improve your skills is not how often you shoot, it’s with whom you shoot. I can honestly say that my skills have improved greatly because of Thunder Mountain patrons like “HARRY”, well I call him “DIRTY HARRY”, this guy does not MISS, and is always happy to answer questions, and give suggestions if you are smart enough to listen. He has got some real SKILLS/Talent, and does it without SKEET-GEAR, fancy jackets/guns or elitist/snobby attitude.

The reason I love Thunder Mountain is because of the Caliber of Patrons/Visitors, because “Harry” is not the only PRO that can be found there on any given day.

Something needs to be said for the Management/Employees, they know how to create a safe, professional, and relaxed atmosphere… and this may sound “CHEESY/CHEERS’Y” but this is the “Kind of Place, where people always know your name”, yes even a name like Yuriy.

    Oh Man! Oh Man!

I LOVE this place! There is nothing quite like a lazy day outside in the sun, with a shotgun. Thunder Mountain offers practice/trap/skeet and they are all extremely fun. The owners are very friendly and the staff are all relaxed and helpful. I come as often as I can and bring friends including a newcomer or two each time. EVERYONE, and I truly mean EVERYONE loves it and raves about it. I always get asked when we are coming back. Shooting is fun and safe for all ages, as I have seen children and adults of all ages participating. There is a lot of professionalism in play too as they strictly enforce all gun safety rules.

Everyone should be coming by once as it is a very short drive from Manhattan and the prices are very fair, so why not?!?!

Oh and be sure to tip your puller! 😀

I’m writing by this review after leaving this place after my 3rd time shooting here. This place is great, easy on the eye, and well run. First time I came here I didn’t have a gun, the following two times I brought my own. Borrowing a gun was easy and they gave the proper safety and use tutorials. Bringing my own gun is not an issue, as well as using my own qualifying ammo. Everyone is nice, and the price is super fair. I drive from new york, about an hour drive, which to me isn’t long at all, but we’ll worth it regardless.

    Good Afternoon,

I brought a group of 25 people up to Thunder Mountain this morning to shoot some skeet. A large percentage of my group had never shot skeet before. All the instructors did a great job helping my attendees learn how to shoot a gun and hit a clay bird. One instructor, who was teaching the people in my particular group (of 6 of us), did a really outstanding job. His name was Jeremy. He took the time and made each and every person feel at ease with the shotgun, learning how to handle it, and shoot it. He also followed through after the person shot and helped correct their mistakes. Only one of my group didn’t hit a bird! Many of these people never held a gun before and were breaking birds…..some even powdered a few birds! Jeremy did an excellent job and went way beyond what was expected of him in his job. We all thanked him and I told what a great job he had done but I wanted the management to know also. I’ve been shooting skeet for over 30 years but Jeremy didn’t know that…. I listened (incognito) to him explain and teach my fellow group members. He really is an asset to Thunder Mountain. Hopefully when I bring my group back up to TM next year to shoot, Jeremy will be there again.

I rarely write reviews for places I visit but I had to make an exception for Thunder Mountain. Went here with a group of 11 people from work. We had a mix of men and women and we were all basically beginners. We had a fantastic time. The staff is super-friendly, accommodating and professional. The instructors were awesome and helped out a lot and gave great tips, feedback and encouragement. Everyone enjoyed themselves tremendously. I would definitely recommend Thunder Mountain range for a day out, without a doubt.

First time was on Father’s Day with son & daughter and second time yesterday for son’s 13th birthday. This time we brought along 2 cousins (11 & 13 – 1st time for those boys & they loved it!). If you’re used to pistols/rifles & stationary paper targets, like we are, this is very different and more challenging… and far more fun.
There was a good amount of cars, but no waiting- so we got right out to our station with our range official. Everyone there is very courteous, professional & patient. It’s easy to find on GPS, no fee to get in the park if your going to the range. Love the fact it’s open year round! Next time, Mom says she’s going along too!

Great place, they supply the guns, all you do is purchase targets and amo. Great for the entire family, theres even a lake with a beach down the street so if your not a shooter you can relax and read a book while the others in your family have a good time shooting. I went here last week for the first time. A few of us shot guns before but we are not experts by any means. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They even ordered us a pizza while we were waiting. Price is very reasonable. Everyone in our group hit the clay targets which made it fun but they weren’t gimme’s at all. I am new to shotgun shooting and was taken to Thunder Mountain by a shooting friend. He identified Laurie as a veteran of the facility and asked her to be my puller. Laurie was wonderful. She is patient and kind and gave me many tips on shooting and accurately critiqued my shooting. Although frustrated at first, Laurie would not let me feel bad about my performance. She encouraged me through each miss and celebrated each hit. I plan to go back next week to spend more time under her excellent instruction.

Today was my second time shooting and second time at Thunder Mountain. Jeremy was fantastic! He had great advice, was more than willing to help me out, and very friendly. The first time I shot at thunder Mountain was in 1992. I went up there with my cousin and shot all day. We had a real good time. At the time I had a MEC reloader and asked the owner if I could pick up my shells (brand new AA’s) she (owner Ruth K) said this one time she would allow it but next time the answer would be no. Then she immediately informed us that gratuities were accepted by the pullers. I jokingly said this is not a restaurant it’s a clay shooting facility, she got serious (rude) and said gratuities are purely voluntary. I refused to tip the puller and soon after we left.

So what’s my opinion of Thunder Mountain? For beginners and first-time shooters Thunder Mountain serves a very important role in getting people started in clay shooting sports. However, unless you are a very wealthy individual you will not be able to take your game to the next level. if you’re looking to become a competitive shooter which usually involves long sessions of focused practice this is not the place for you.

On the spur of the moment, we decided to come skeet shooting at Thunder Mountain. It was the best afternoon!! my teenage son and daughter, and my husband and I, had a wonderful time. The instructor was fun and knowledgeable, the cabin was welcoming: beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers, clean sitting area with fireplace, and best of all, neat and clean bathrooms 🙂 The couple running the place was very pleasant.

We will definitely come back often, and bring more friends. Thank you!!

I came to thunder mountain for my first time shooting. The people are kind and instructive and Within the third shot I was hitting the targets. The stations are cleaned regularly and well maintained making the day all the more enjoyable. My Dad and I come about once or twice a week and always have a great time. Skeet shooting is a great activity for the whole family no matter what age or amount of experience the shooter has. On a 1-10 scale Thunder mountain definitely deserves a 10.

What an awesome place!! My buddy and I wanted to start shooting clays so we visited Thunder Mountain one weekend. We had no idea what we doing but everyone working there was more then helpful; every puller/instructor helped us to become better shooters. We learned the basics on the practice field and quickly moved our way up to the trap field. I have had so much fun at Thunder Mountain, I am there nearly every Saturday now. From the owner to the youngest employee, everyone there is nice and very helpful. I can’t recommend this place enough. Great for beginners up to professionals. A+++

I went here with a friend of mine for my first time shooting ever. It was a phenominal experience. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful (I feel like a jerk in hindsight for not giving them a tip, I did not realize it was customary to do). For a first time shooter, I cannot imagine a better place to go. The grounds are beautiful, especially when snow-covered. They supply you with everything you could need to have a great day of shooting. I will continue going there whenever I can. If you like trap/skeet shooting, give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

Me and my friends went up to Thunder Mountain Tonight to try out target shooting and the staff up there was great. It was all our first time shooting so the guy, Dan, was a great help on giving us pointers before and during our shoot. The facility is lit up well at night so you can go any time of day and they have 3 different types of shooting. I had a blast up there and i am definitely going up again soon.

Safety 1st– I have observed all pullers inforce any infraction with shooters/ its not personal if a shooter has to be told the rules while handling a loaded shot gun by the puller. ## grounds are cleaned regularly of spent shells & maintained very well under the supervision of “bob”. I like shooting there & seeing how nice the well kept grounds are=neat/clean. Skeet is a somewhat a social activity where sometimes the score is not that important as meeting other shooters trying their best & having fun doing it. Many get good hits. Once there, you are made to feel welcome whether you hit or miss the clays. Mike:)

I have never fired a gun in my life before today. And it was a nifty experience! I felt a little awkward going there because I don’t know anything about guns but they saw I was a novice (and so were A LOT of people there) and they told me to relax and that I was going to enjoy it and that were going to give me an instructor and I was going to have a lot of fun. And she was right! I waited about 20 min and I was in a group with 4 other people- 3 of them also had never fired a weapon before either. The instructor was really friendly and very patient. We each got individual instruction when it was our turn. The people I was with very friendly and it was a nice day out for only $18.50. I mean you can’t beat that! And they lend you the gun. I called a few other places, but you have to bring your own gun. I found no other place like this! Well, I hit 20 out of 25 clay targets my first time out and it was a lot of fun. I’ll definitely be back to thunder mountsin soon and I will definitely be buying my own 12 gauge soon, and most likely from them! I couldn’t have been happier with them.

I had a good time when i came here. The instructors were very nice and helpful, they had good quality guns, but the only bad thing is its expensive and waiting time. It cost $9 for 25 shells and $9 for 25 clay birds and the instructors also expect a $3 tip, so it ends up being $21 for 1 round i went three rounds and gave the instructor a $10 tip since it was just me at the end it cost $72. The wait times are about 10min between rounds because they have to set up the clays and get the guns also you are usualy in a group of five so you take turns other than that a real fun place had a great 3 hours there.

Went the first time in late August w/ 2 friends to check it out and we shot the 20ga. Came back the next day with my 11 year old son Mike, an avid air-soft gun enthusiast and used the .410s. Mike immediately moved up to the 20ga. for round 2. Came back with the family and then had his 12th birthday there on 9/15 with 6 of his friends, and some Dads shot as well. Everyone had a great time. Gotta get back there to see the foliage and hit some more before all the leaves fall. Thanks Bob & Lisa! 🙂

My wife and I brought my 12 year old son and 8 of his friends for a birthday day out. None of them had shot a gun before. The park was beautiful. We were greeted warmly by owners Robert and Lisa. Within minutes we were geared up and on the range. Our instructors were knowledgable and extremely patient, taking time explaining how to aim and shoot the targets. All the boys walked away having had success. They all can’t wait to go back and do it again. It is a great place for a birthday party for young teens. The owners and staff make it a memorable experience for all.

If you want to experience fun of shooting in the family oriented setting – this is a place for you. I started off as a visitor and now I am there all the time. Rob and his staff are extremely friendly and helpful, whether you are seasoned shooter or a beginner. They make you feel like the part of their family. The prices are very reasonable and the gun shop is as professional as any gun shop you would ever go to.
No one rushes you despite of how busy they may be. Safety is of utmost importance and the instructions are provided. This is the best place in Northern Jersey to shoot skeet, trap, wobble or just come and practice shooting. If only one member of the family is shooting the park with all that it has to offer is a great place to spend a weekend with picnicking, boating, fishing and so on. Just great!!!

hello everyone, me and my girlfriend been talking about going to try to go skeet shooting. been trying and wanting to go for a while now but doesn’t have time. her uncle and cousins went and been coming back, i guess that motivated her to finally find time and go. we finally made it last night. we got there at 730pm went straight to the office, we told the 2 guys in the counter that it was our first time there and we would like to try and shoot skeet. guys were nice let us know how things work, box of ammo 12 gauge $9 and 25 skeet target for $9. a person guides you to the area where you will shoot. tells you how it works a and show you how to aim and showed us first that the target will fly and you aim and shoot. shot gun by the way is not rented they just let you use it for free. Pete is our guide instructor, gives us tips, nice and friendly. lets me shoot 1 shot, then gave pointers, then shoot 4, then my girlfriends turn, shoot 1, then 4, then my turn to shoot 10 and her turn to shoot 10 and so on. me and my girlfriend had a great experience, we will definitely be back. (if you guys go bring cash or check.) i love it and my girlfriend loved it, we stayed a little bit to watch and my girlfriend said before we even leave “when are we coming back” and i said you liked it huh hehehe! hope you guys try it if you have not shoot skeet yet very nice experience.

Thunder Mountain is a family oriented facility. I used to shoot there very frequently in the 70’s. I got away from trap shooting for a long time and recently decided to pick it up again since my 2 nieces expressed interest in shooting. Returning to Thunder Mountain was like coming home. The ranges are just as I remembered, clean and well maintained. There are lawn chairs and picnic tables for a anyone to enjoy. The clubhouse/gun shop is very comfortable and relaxing.
The owners, Bob & Lisa make you feel like family and take an active interest in helping a new shooter. My nieces were very impressed with the care and patience shown to them in their initial instruction to gun handling and shooting. We have now made Thunder Mountain a weekly outing for the 3 of us.

As beginners, my wife and I visited Thunder Mountain for the first time this Labor Day morning (as a birthday present for my wife who — out of the blue — expressed an interest recently in shooting trap/skeet). We had a wonderful time! Rob and his staff did a great job getting us set up with shotguns, rounds and earplugs and then with no wait we were on the practice range. After shooting a box (25 rounds), we quickly moved to the trap range. Working with Pete, who was quite helpful, we shot two rounds. My wife hit 8 of 25 the second round — very solid for a beginner. We look forward to heading back with some of our kids this fall.

It’s an awesome place to introduce young kids to sport shooting. The instructors are kid friendly, and are willing to give that extra attention to ensure that the kids learn how to shoot, and have a great time too. It’s definitely worth the drive, and is a great family outing.

Upon my arrival at thunder mountain, I was greeted by rob at the counter. He was very pleasant. I had a skeet shooting lesson with Lori. She was an excellent instructor. She worked with me until I got the technique correct. Once I got to skeet shooting with other people, the man ( Dave) did an excellent job overseeing the event. I felt very comfortable here. I will return often to do skeet shooting. This facility is at the top of my list.

After an uneventful afternoon in the NJ Botanical Gardens, I kept hearing what I recognized as gunfire echoing in the distance. I convinced my girlfriend to check it out, and it turned out to be Thunder Mountain. After watching for a few minutes, it looked amazingly fun, and then I saw the main office. I thought I would inquire about rates and if I needed my own shotgun. The front desk was very helpful and advised they take first timers all the way up the chain!

My girlfriend and I waited about 20 minutes before our names were called and we had a female instructor (Sorry I forgot her name!) and she was fantastic. Having never shot a shotgun before, she taught both of us fundamentals and the basics, as well as gun safety.

The whole group had a blast (no pun intended) that we got to enjoy trap shooting. We will definitely be returning this week!

First time we tried this sport…we arrived at Thunder Mountain and found the facility was nice, open and clean – and everyone was friendly. Owners and staff were friendly and helpful – getting us started in just a few minutes. For first timers – you don’t need any prior experience or equipment…just show up – they will supply you with everything you need: a gun, box of ammo, ear plugs, clay targets, and someone to help get you started and guide you as you shoot. We shot 25 rounds each – hitting 17/25 and 19/25 our first time out. I would recommend Thunder Mountain to anyone looking for a fun and different activity to try out – I hope to go back again before the end of the summer.

PROs: If you don’t have your own gun, then this place is for you. I went up there a lot when a friend didn’t have his own gun, but once he got his NJ firearm ID, we never have gone back. They are open late which is nice.

CONs: Prices are high, including the optional tip (which is generally expected). They get crowded and wait times can be horrendous at times. Lady at desk doesn’t like it when you use credit card (especially if you decided to add another round later in the day). You get first or second timers which slows down the rhythm of the squad.

The people here are great. They are really personable and honest. I have never been to a shooting range, not even held a gun before. And I was scared!! I’ve dislocated my right shoulder twice and was really concerned that the recoil would hurt my arm. I asked a ton of questions, and they didn’t pressure me to shoot with the group if I was too scared of the pain I might get. In the end I went shooting and I am so happy that I did I had a great time! They had given me a smaller gun with smaller shells and smaller recoil, also a vest with some padding on the shoulder area. I folded the vest in two and wore it in half to give myself some more padding. It worked great. I never thought I would say this but.. I will defiantly be back!

Such a great place staffed and owned by knowledgeable and supportive people. A beautiful spot to spend time learning and perfecting a fun sport. Maybe just maybe you will get some tips from a former top ranked shooter. Yes its the cute older lady behind the desk!! The tri state area is so lucky to have Thunder Mountain. When I started writing this review, I was prompted to check a box for how many times I’ve visited this club. Instead of choosing ‘once’, I chose the ‘2-5’ visits box because that’s how many times I plan to go per month from here on out. This place is the real deal. I shoot a lot at my home club W&W Sporting Clays in Jax, FL when I’m visiting my parents and this place stacks up very well. The the people that run the place are as friendly as it gets and the whole experience is just great. Never shot any other clubs in the tri state area and not planning to explore any others, it couldn’t be better than Thunder Mountain.

This is a wonderful facility… Ruth’s a doll, and the guys out at the range offer very helpful advice. Once summer comes I should be here at least once a week. But be aware that they have CLOSED their 5-stand, which is a shame. But there are so many trap/skeet positions that they does offer some variety. Cash only, but there is an ATM onsite (and if the ATM doesn’t work, as happened to me, they will take a credit card- but they tend to keep that a secret, they prefer the cash).

I brought a troop of Boy Scouts to Thunder Mountain this past weekend. I expected a good experience based on the very positive phone conversations I had made, but what we received was even better than expected. This is a great place to shoot for many reasons, however, Ruth is not one of those reasons. It’s only 5 minutes from NYC and the skeet fields are decent. The kids who work there are terrific; they are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Rob is a decent guy too, but his mother Ruth is just plain rude. She is condescending to her customers and treats her staff like crap. If you can manage to ignore Ruth and not let her nasty personality bother you, it’s a fun day.

There aren’t a lot of skeet clubs left around and after a time off of shooting, there’s still no better way to learn (re-learn) clay target shooting then time on a skeet field. So, it’s great that Thunder Mountain still exists. Having said that, Ruth and Rob don’t make it easy to be a customer there. These people must have either been screwed by customers repeatedly through the years or are just obsessed with making sure they get every cent of theirs. Through the course of a 3 hour visit to shoot, I must have been asked about payment 4 times today. Then, when we were done, and time to pay, I was informed that they no longer accept credit card. In this day and age, not accepting credit cards is a bit ridiculous. Having said all that, it was great to see the clientele including a non-trivial proportion of under 40 year olds. And that’s good.

I have been shooting at TM since the 60’s when it was a Winchester franchise..after a long absence I started shooting again and met Ruth and Rob. These are two knowledgeable and gracious people who are always eager to help. Any advice either of them gave me, including making a gun change when I was struggling, was excellent and right on target (no pun intended). I bought a few guns from them and found that their prices were competitive and as far as ammo goes you are buying on site and after all they are in business to make a living, so if it costs a dollar or two more than the big box stores so be it. If you are a high volume shooter consider reloading. I have brought several first time shooters up there and they were treated wonderfully and Laurie or one of the other trappers was very patient with them on the practice trap. I give them 5 stars..

office, we told them we were first timers. They told us they love first timers. They put us in a group of 7. Our instructor was Randy a young guy, but knew his stuff. He was a bit quiet at first but than opened up and we all got a long fine. If you go there for as a first timer, ask for Randy. I’ll be going back and hope he’ll be there. I hit 20 out of 25 clays. Not bad for not shooting in many years. I was top shot for our group of 7. You can’t beat the price and how easy it is to get there. A great way to spend some time with family and friends.

I went to Thunder Mountain this Sunday afternoon to get the rust out ahead of hunting season with a few rounds of trap. I go there about once or twice a year to get in some practice.

Staff was friendly and helpful to me and others who are not regulars. They made it easy.

Great place, friendly owner. Walked right in and I barely even said anything and the owner set me right up, really nice. An hour wait but as expected on a Saturday arriving at around 1pm. A little confusing if you’ve never been there. I got lost getting there from Flushing. The range was nice, in the middle of the woods. At first walking to the main desk there were a lot of people on both sides and it was awkward because I felt new, but let me assure you, these were also beginners as well as I found out later. I think if you go with a group of 6 people you could get your own range and instructor. It was just me and gf so we went with two other groups of two as well. I don’t really know our instructors name, but he was very helpful. Without some of his useful tips I wouldn’t have been able to shoot ten in a row like I did. Got lost, but once you know your way there it should be easy to get there. Prices are very good I think. $18.50 a person for 25 shots and 25 targets with ear plugs. If it’s your first time then be sure to know that you cannot reuse the clay targets as they break on impact with the ground. So it’s basically if you miss you move on to the next shot until you have no more ammo left. Next time I’m going to do 50 targets :D.

DIRECTIONAL HELP: Instead of getting directions to Morris RD, get directions to the end of MANSION RD right by Shepard Pond. This is the real location of the skeet range. Good Luck.

I have been going for several years as an enthusiast of trap. I only get to go a few times each year and the folks always make it enjoyable. I often come with friends and family and picnic in the park. I have brought many first time shooters and each and every one of them wants to go back again and again. The staff are always friendly and helpful and make sure that even the worst shooters have a good time. This is a great place to truly enjoy a great family activity.

I am a complete shooting novice. I brought my 72 yr. old father-in-law, and 9 yr. old son. We all had a blast. My son could not shoot, but they made him feel great. The service behind the desk was personable and professional. The shooting instructors were pleasant and provided great guidance and tips. Overall, we had a very fun time and we will be going back soon.

I have hunted for years now with shotguns and rifles and shot some clays out of a hand thrown clay devices.
I never shot sporting clays at a regular clay range before.
I just retired and wanted to start shooting on a regular basis.
I belong to a range in upstate NY but never use the shotguns there on clays, just to fire slugs and buckshot and my big bore rifles.
I was talking to a friend of mine and he said why don’t you try shooting clays at Thunder Mountain in Ringwood NJ.
I said I never heard of it, he told me go on their web sight and check it out.
I and the wife went up in June and was really impressed with the place and the staff. Went back again in July. Went back in August again with a neighbor. Will keep on going back very nice place, very helpful and nice people that own and work at Thunder Mountain.
I see quite a few young people there and it makes me happy that people are getting into sports with firearms.
There are too many anti-gun people out there that just do not know how you can have fun and be safe with firearms.
Thunder Mountain is a great place for beginners and for people that love to shoot sporting clays.
    Great place try it.

We’ve enjoyed shooting trap at Thunder Mountain for over 10 years. For the first time shooters we often bring, the instruction is thorough and patient. We value having this facility near us, and appreciate that they always offer such a warm welcome to new enthusiasts as well as experienced shooters. We really value that this facility is available to us – to be able to introduce someone to this great sport for the price of a box of shells and the clays (without having to invest in a shotgun) is so appreciated. We also appreciate the ‘no nonsense’ safety practiced in the entire facility.

Let me start by saying that I am relatively new to clay shooting – just started about 4-5 months ago. I have been going to TM almost every week since I started. 25+ times so far and counting. So far the entire staff has been great. Overall, I have found everyone to be very knowledgeable and I have received great tips and advice when it comes to shooting. Randy, Marco, Mike, etc. My scores have improved dramatically from when I first started. I also have received a lot of great info with regards to choosing to the right gun. The owner Rob is a very nice guy and so is his wife. Rob has let me try out different guns on more than one occasion. What better way to see if a gun is good for you than to try it. He also has some of the best prices around on new guns. Not too much to say about the clubhouse. It is about what you’d expect. It’s clean, comfortable and relaxing – although I usually don’t spend too much time in there. Occasionally there may be a wait to shoot but it has never been too long. I usually go in the mornings on the weekends or on Friday afternoons and it is not crowded at all. Prices to shoot seem fair to me, but TM is really the only place I go so I do not have much to compare them too. I buy round cards and it winds up being much cheaper – about 6 bucks or so per round. I definitely recommend going this route.

I have read a couple negative reviews about Ruth and also about how Thunder Mountain is “all about the money”. I guess everyone has their own experiences, so I can’t really comment on them. I’d like to share one of mine though. About a month ago, I went up to TM to shoot some trap. When it came time to pay, I went into my wallet to get my round card and I could not find it anywhere. Round cards are like cash or a gift card and if you lose it, it’s like losing cash. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed. Anyway, once I realized, I could not find the card, I pulled out some cash to pay with. Ruth told me not to worry about it and to go home and see if I could find my card; and if not, I could pay next time. I don’t know of too many places that would do that…Do you? Especially places that are “all about the money”. Fast forward one week. I am back at TM to shoot some more trap. This time Rob and his wife are at the front counter. I explain what happened a week earlier and I remind them that I still owe them money. Rob says no problem…he asks me how much I had left on my card before I lost it and he gives me a new card. How many places do you know that would do this??? I have been going there for a while now, so they know me a bit and I suppose there is some level of trust there, but still…It was my own fault that I lost my card, not theirs. Try walking into Wal-Mart and telling them you lost a gift card and see what they say. Talk about being cool. It’s the little things like this (although this was not that little) that will keep me coming back to Thunder Mountain for years to come. I give Thunder Mountain 5 stars. Thanks.

I have been shooting here since the 60’s. It has always been a convenient location for me and some years I would go as often as twice a week. The owners are knowledgeable but they don’t suffer fools gladly. The trap pullers are all friendly and knowledgeable.

Have been going to Thunder Mountain about once a week (on average) for the past year or so. Overall a decent place to shoot. Most of the pullers are very friendly and pretty knowledgeable. I have to say that many of the other reviews are very accurate about the older woman (Ruth). She can be (and many times is) very rude and condescending to people (both customers and employees). It’s strange, because it is almost never warranted. She just really comes off as shrewd and nasty (don’t let the fake smile fool you). Again, I have been going to Thunder Mountain consistently for over a year now; so my opinion is based on a large sample size, not just one or two isolated incidents. She really does make you not want to go there at all. I still go mainly because it is convenient (and I don’t want to bite my nose to spite my face). I just try to have as little interaction with Ruth as possible. You’d be wise to do the same. It’s a shame, because most of the rest of the staff is very friendly. The guy Rob (owner) is a nice guy, but a bit full of “it” when it comes to trying to sell you stuff. His prices are pretty good though if you can get him down. Again, a nice enough guy, but do your own research on products before you buy from him.

Another tip…It can be expensive to buy ammo from them. I recommend buying ammo by the case (or from somewhere else) as they are very expensive if you buy from them by the box.

Great place, friendly staff – except for the lady behind the counter. She’s awful, as mentioned in previous posts. Once you get out of the cabin, you’re good to go. The place was a mess when I went, but it was after a holiday weekend and they said the garbage hadn’t been collected. All in all a fun day with a large group of experience and inexperienced shooters. I wont be heading back anytime soon though, the prices are high and the lady at the desk really pissed me off.

Well what more can I say that has not been said in the tremendous reviews of Thunder Mtn – Oh yes not only are the staff and pullers wonderful towards beginners and experts alike – but the shooters and guests are terrific, warm, friendly, and inviting. So come and watch or even better come and experience some of the friendliest shooters in the nation – from novice to expert everyone is welcome and accepted into this most excellent shooting community. Ladies don’t be bashful as women of all ages are the fastest growing segment in shooting sports, and Thunder Mtn provides a wonderful environment for Ladies and children to learn safe firearms handling while enjoying the clay target sports offered. So Ladies, Gentlemen, and entire families alike come to enjoy the various sports offered. Safety first is the credo Thunder Mtn lives by. So staff and shooters all share in assuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.
And after your shoot relax in the comfortable clubhouse with a cool or hot beverage or take a short drive down to Shepard Lake to picnic, swim, paddle a boat or enjoy the relaxing NJ Botanical Gardens and take in the serenity of the gardens. I promise there is something for everyone to enjoy – but let the enjoyment begin with the exhilaration of clay target shooting at Thunder Mtn. – where you are always welcome.

Gun safety noticed thruout my visits/ 1st time shooters are sent to practice area with qualified instructor that supervises the 1st timer as to how to safely load/ aim/ & discharge the shotgun being used. On the actual skeet range, any fraction of unsafe handling of gun is immediately dealth with by fellow shooters. They do not want even the slightest chance for someone to get “accidentally” hurt thru someones carelessness. I feel safe when I am there enjoying the freedom of the right to bear arms & enjoy my sport to the fullest. Owners care & watch what goes on with the many people that come to shoot. I am not the only there enjoying what is offered.

My wife and I visited TM for the first time last week. We had a great time. All the personnel were extremely helpful and you couldn’t ask for a more relaxed friendly atmosphere. I didn’t get the name of the gentleman at the practice range but none the less he was great. Marco helped us on the skeet range and again, was outstanding. We will be back very soon. I’ve got visits planned both with co-workers at the job and a family trip. TM is a must visit. You’ll be hooked in no time. Thanks to all.

I highly recommend Thunder Mountain. The facilities are great, the owners and staff are extremely friendly and there is a great atmosphere of conviviality, tradition and sportsmanship about the place. You can visit it once in a while, or stick around and learn the ways of clay shooting, and in either case you will love the place, and the people. I have been coming to Thunder Mountain for almost nine years now, and Ruth, and Bob, Jason, Marco, Damien, Randy, Laurie, Nolan and others have really helped me improve my shooting skills. Its a welcome retreat from the monotony and the rat-race of the everyday homogenized world, where guns are used safely for a fun purpose, and friendships are made with interesting characters.

Took my sons, ages 11 and 8, with me on my 50th birthday. I had never done skeet shooting before but I wanted to do something exciting with my boys. I didn’t know what to bring or expect, so I gave a call prior to leaving. I was told that I needed nothing to bring, that they had everything. They were right, right down to the ear plugs that I forgot! The staff couldn’t have been nicer. What a great time we had! Under close supervision by one of Thunder Mountain’s trained instructors we all hit at least 1 target, even my 8 year old, and I hit 23 of 25. Not bad for a beginner (beginners luck I’m sure). Most importantly, we all got home safe to talk about the great time we had. I’m so very happy that I decided to do this instead of taking a 20 minute helicopter ride around NYC. I’m hooked and it won’t be 50 years before I try this again. In fact we’ve decided to go twice a month. Thanks, Thunder Mountain Staff, for a “BLAST” of a 50th birthday!!!

This is a very nice facility. I found Rob, Ruth, and all of the staff to be very friendly. I’ve brought my (adult) daughters there and they’ve received basic instruction from the staff that was very helpful.

I haven’t shot trap in over 10 years, I was a little skeptical to go at first, because my son had never shot at a range. And I remember going other places where the cranky old guys would yell at you if you made a mistake. But my fears were un-founded at Thunder Mountain. You couldn’t wish for nicer people. Even the seasoned vets let my son take his time. Great day all around, we will be back…

Years ago before I moved to Ringwood, a good friend of mine and I would drive up from Bergen County to shoot at Thunder Mountain. It was a half day event for us (including breakfast out), and I always had a great time and honed my skills under the terrific direction of the focused staff. Fast forward 15 years and now I live close enough to hear the faint sound of the shotguns on rare days when the winds and humidity are just right. As it turns out, I have “re-discovered” the treasure that is Thunder Mountain now that my son has gained an interest in the sport. What an luxury to now live only minutes away from what is quickly becoming a weekend ritual for us both. Best part of this story is that when I walked into the shop after a nearly two decade absence, virtually all was exactly the same! From the expert staff and their dedication to safety to the comfortable setting and promotion of the sport as a family experience, Thunder Mountain is truly a gold mine in the Highlands. Our thanks to all who make this possible.

I’m only 16 and this will guaranteed be a life time sport of enjoyment. thanks to Rob, Ruth, Casey, Randy, Marco, Mike, Monica… and all the staff members. I try to go at least once a week to shoot skeet. About 3 years ago I read an article in The Record about Thunder Mtn. Skeet Club. Having been away from the sport for many years, the idea of being able to try it out appealed to me. Since then I have purchased one of my guns from them and am a regular shooter.
I find all the staff very friendly and helpful. The owners, Ruth and Rob, are very generous in their advice and are genuinely interested in my shooting experience and enjoyment.
Working with the staff, including Laurie and Jason, makes my shooting very enjoyable. I continue to shoot weekly and am glad to be able to go there on a very regular basis.

I started to go to T.M. in April 09 but before that I went there just before my son was born, 15 years ago!
My son asked me if we could go skeet shooting and I said “ok lets go”! Thunder Mountain came to mind right away. I was wondering if the place was still in business. On to the internet and found it was still going strong.
I have found that the staff are young, but are also very knowledgeable about shooting skeet. If you ask, they will give you some very good tips on how to shoot better.
The facilities are in great shape and there is a comfortable atmosphere on the ranges.
I have mostly dealt with Rob, and have found him to be very friendly and courteous with other customers as well as with me and my son. I was looking to buy an O/U shotgun and Rob gave me on to use for a few rounds! I really liked the gun but couldn’t afford it:(. When I came back 2 weeks later with a NEW O/U that was in my price range, Rob said “good for you, now go and have some fun”
Laurie is great with first timers, as I took my wife to show her what my son and I love to do so much. My wife had a great time and will bring her friends in the future.
Marco and Jason have been the greatest help to my shooting. Their tips help alot for both me and my son.
As long as I can afford to go to Thunder Mountain I will! My son and I have our own competition and the kid keeps beating me!

As a first time shooter, and aspiring hunter, I found this facility to be more than adequate to the needs of a beginner. The staff were all friendly enough, previous posts stated that management were rude to other staff members. I did notice that a majority of the staff were very young, 16-20 something years old. They were slacking/wasting time (smoking, horsing around, etc.) when I witnessed a manager yelling at them, so to be fair, it was not undue. All members of the facility were courteous and friendly to all customers they encountered. Another previous post(s) mentioned that the staff were knowledgeable yet lacked certain wisdom in regards to shooting. While this may be true in some aspects, it has nothing to do with experience, perhaps just a lack of refinement or passion. All members of the staff were very helpful and encouraging to this first timer, giving correcting advice and constructive criticism along the way( which really helped!). I purchased my own target load ammo at Ramsey Outdoor for $6.50 after reading here that the facility charges $9 per box of 25. To shoot 50 rounds of trap (or maybe it was skeet… the clay just kept moving away from me) was $16, sans ammo or gun rental (I brought all my own). (You could shoot one round of 25 for $8). I tipped the young man a few bucks for being so helpful, and look forward to going back when my shoulder heals sometime next month! Overall, I feel it was almost cheaper than shooting pool in some places in NJ. I got more of an adrenaline rush and feeling of confidence that I wouldn’t get after a few rounds of pool and the cocktails that so often coincide!

I went to Thunder Mountain today with my family. We are total beginners, and came about an hour before they closed. Everything was awesome. The lady that sold us the ammo, and Marco (I think that was his name) the guy who was our helper (or whatever the official term is) were fantastic. I’ve never shot a shotgun in my entire life and I got 18/25 skeets. My other family members did horribly, but it was their own faults.

    100% fantastic

Thunder Mountain in a great place to shoot for beginners. If you are a experienced shooter this is not the place for you. If you are experienced (shooting more than a year) join a private club or a traveling club. Many private clubs in Long Island, Ct, Westchester, Orange Counties.
    Pros: instruction is always offered,
Cons: expensive (bring your own ammo…they charge 9 per box…you can go to walmart and get ammo for about 20 for a case of 4 boxes), many private clubs in area let you shoot for 3 a round, also they expect tips for trappers
The owners always want to sell you something you don’t need. Especially Ruth. I have seen her act rude to employees but never to customers.
I have been going regularly for the past 2 years. If you want attention go on the off hours….if you go when its crowded they really lack customer service. They are just motivated by making money.
The staff is quite friendly although they may not always be “experts.”

Overall…go if you are a beginner. If you are experienced or want to become experienced you will have a MUCH better time in a club.

Overall, this is the best place I’ve found to shoot skeet that is within driving distance of Westchester County although it’s not without its faults. PROS: Great facility, friendly and reliable attendants, they sell reloading supplies. CONS: Expensive, the owner is sometimes very rude to her employees, if its busy you can easily get packed onto one range with 6 or 7 other shooters, also I’ve been there literally dozens of times and I still feel like they don’t remember me when I come in. If you’re an experienced shooter, I recommend trying to go on “off hours” as to avoid getting jammed with a very large group shooting on a single range. If you are a new shooter, I definitely recommend Thunder Mountain as a starting point.

I’ve got mixed feelings about Thunder Mountain. I started shooting there and it is a great facility to learn at. They are open to new shooters, the pullers are generous with instruction and if you don’t own a gun it is one of the few options in the area. However, the more I went there, the more I noticed I was treated like a dollar sign and not like a valued customer. The last time I shot skeet, I was given a trap gun and belittled when I asked for a skeet gun. I’ve witness the same cavalier attitude towards other customers as well. It’s a great facility to shoot at, just thicken your skin when dealing with the owners.

Only set back is he’ll probably love it and that means I’ll have to buy him a gun. Just wish the sport wasn’t so expensive. Try it out – you’ll love it. Plan on trying night shooting.

Thunder Mountain is a great place to shoot! I am new at it and the staff and other shooters are very friendly and helpful (everyone always asks if you want help before jumping in). The facilities are clean and well maintained, prices are fair. I always look forward to my next trip to Thunder Mountain.

I have to say this place stinks to high heaven. The only one I haven’t found to be a rude know it all is the owners son. The owner is the rudest snob I have ever met. She tried verbally abusing me and downgrading me in front of other customers. She tried giving me a lecture like she thought she was my mother just because the ammo I had with me I didn’t buy from them. Ive seen and heard her be equally as nasty to her employees as well. The staff is comprised of a bunch of kids who think that they are professional trap shooters just because they work at a trap range and they will sit there and even though not asked put in their two cents. The facilities are ok but the people there ruin the whole thing.

My Son (19)and I(53) were first timers at this facility Saturday 8/9/08 we were instantly treated as old friends, ALL of the staff were very helpful to the last detail. It was our extreme pleasure to have Damian as our assister/teacher and coach, He was just fantastic to the last detail. I would encourage everyone who has an interest in shooting or learning to shoot to visit this facility they are ALL pros in every way. THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES

I really enjoyed it. I never shot a gun before but I have shot a bb gun. they gave me a .410 and I hit 15 the first time and 18 the next time. That’s pretty good for a 11 year old. They let me shoot there at the age of 11. I give it a ten.

This place is great, I have never been skeet shooting let alone thought about shooting any type of gun. As soon as we checked in everyone was very friendly and helpful! Now I am hooked!!! We had Lori as our instructor she was fantastic, she made me feel at ease right away!! I plan on going back in mid July with more people.

This place was fantastic. This is the second time in my life I’ve ever gone to a range and fired a gun so needless to say…I’m a novice, but the staff and the facilities were great. I went with a buddy and my sister and we all had a blast. I couldn’t believe how much fun we had and it’s a relatively cheap day!!! We each spent about $60 and that was plenty for us. The guns they lent us were fine…although I guess we wouldn’t know the difference anyway. Overall I give this place a 9. I’d give them a 10 if they had sporting clays…but hey…you can’t have it all I suppose. Great place, I’ll definitely be heading back very soon.

Thunder Mountain is a very nice facility in Ringwood. My son and I have been visitors there for years. We have always found Rob and Ruth to be good hosts and informative. Shooting later in day is great fun on top of this mountain. We hope to continue our visits over the years.

Went for the first time with our scout troop, can’t say enough how helpful the staff here was. Many boys had never even shot before and were a little nervous. Staff was patient, encouraging and extremely helpful. put us at ease, though never careless, and we had a great time. even those of us who had shot before (like me though i can’t say i could hit much) learned how to shoot better. we’ll be back. only “downside” now my son wants a new shotgun!

I have now been to this location twice, and plan on going back. I have found the staff very nice and easy to deal with. Having been a bird hunter for the last 20 years, I am just getting into true skeet and have been humbled greatly, but I have found the staff very intuitive and easy to deal with. They have no problem walking someone through the process and if asked giving advice and training. Good overall club. One of the nicest clubs I have come across here in the northeast.

I am a police officer and have been for 12 years. I appreciated
how they led me thru explaining as we went.
    Excellent people.

I also do websites and I was thinking of making one for them for free, just because I appeciated the place.

The four of us went on a balmy day in January 2008 and the two of us (first time with a gun in our hands) “out-shot” our husbands!
We had a great time and our instructor was extremely patient and helpful. We’re going back soon as “The Annie Oakley Club” 🙂

We have taken Boy Scouts to this facility twice and both times we have received excellent service. The boys had a good time and received solid instruction from the staff. The adults, beginners and experienced, also enjoyed themselves. It is a clean, safe environment with a friendly and helpful staff. I recommend it for youth groups and first timers. It makes a great day out with the family also. It is on the grounds of Skylands Manor and the NJ Botanical Gardens and is close to Ringwood Manor so Thunder Mountain can be part of entire day of fun. Enjoy!

I have been shooting at Thunder Mountain since the late 80’s. When I wanted to introduce my fiancee to shooting, I brought her here. The club atmosphere and friendly instructors gave me a shooting partner for life. Our Daughter also learned to shoot here. Great staff and good facilities.

I have shot there many times, it was the first place i ever shot. They were very helpful in teaching me the fundamentals of the games. They rented me a gun appropriate for my size and they were very courteous to me. They have great staff that help you whenever you need it weather its for a gun problem or shooting stances they are very helpful. It is the best facility that I have ever shot at. I have shot there for fun and have shot in leagues that they have held. They are both fun and a great experience to participate in. I am now a regular customer there. I go there 3-4 times a week and am greeted every time I walk into the doors. This shooting facility is simply a great place to shoot whether you are new to shooting or a veteran shooter.

This is the worst place I have ever shot. The people were rude and the owners were verbally abusive to the kids that worked there. As a new shooter, I asked the owner’s son to help me with my new Beretta semi automatic. He tried to get me to buy a used gun from him a month or so prior. When I asked for his help in putting it together he was so rude and said, why should I help you, you didn’t buy the gun from me. I thought he was kidding, but he wasn’t. We were shocked. This was my third visit and the two visits prior had seen similar rudeness. The owner left me waiting at the desk and just ignored me every time. The 3rd time was the last straw and I would never spend my money at such a terrible place again. I’ve heard other stories similar and find it interesting that no one has posted one here. I now shoot three days a week, but would never ever go there again.

I visited Thunder Mountain for the first time this past Saturday and was very satisfied with the facilities, staff and layout. It had been awhile since I last went to a shooting range/area but I quickly got back into the swing of things. This is a good and safe place to learn and practice how to shoot a shotgun. Bring a bag lunch and make a day of it!

Thunder Mountain is a great place to shoot. Their prices are reasonable and you can buy your ammo there or bring your own (as long as it’s an appropriate target load). If you buy your shells there you can use one of their guns at no extra charge. The owners are very knowledgeable and friendly and the pullers are excellent. Many of the pullers are experienced shooters who can provide advice on the proper form and techniques. It’s a very homey feeling place and the scenery is beautiful. We’re fortunate to have such a great club so nearby. Do all your shooting at Thunder Mountain so they stay in business for a long long time

Thunder Mountain is perfectly located; surrounded by the beautiful Shepard Pond and the trails that travel behind it. It shows off a part of New Jersey that some people may not know exists. The skeet & trap site is always clean and the staff is beyond helpful. My first time shooting they made me feel very comfortable and took the time I needed to explain proper techniques and safety.

Ive lived in Ringwood for 8 years, and never knew this was open to the public. I’m very pleased with the services and the personal. They are very helpful and knowledgeable, and also very pleasant. I’m real pleased knowing that there is a great sport for us right in our own back yard. Thanks for the fun! I’ll be there often.

This is a very nice facility run by a very friendly group and courteous staff. I went there last weekend with 3 friends that had never shot before and were taken to the practice trap which greatly increases the shooting experience.
If you don’t have a gun and are willing to buy ammo from them, they will lend you a shotgun with the gauge of your choice.
Be aware of shooting skeet of the #1 field, it has the five stand gates laying between you and the flight path, creating a distraction on your shots.

Thunder mountain is a great skeet shooting facility. I love to go there. My dad took me and the first time I did it I used a 410 ga. and I got 25 clay targets in a row. They have a great staff and the pullers are very nice. I went the first time with my dad, and sister.

I hosted my brother’s bachelor party here a while back and we had a blast. The staff is great, they keep things running smoothly while keeping it low key. We had several first time shooters with us (who were a bit nervous) but they made everyone feel right at home. Anytime someone new comes to visit me, I bring them here. In fact, I am bringing a rookie out on Saturday! It can get crowded but I have never had a bad experience while waiting. If you’re looking for something new to do, or want to show someone a good time (male or female), give Thunder Mountain a try. You won’t regret it.

Much like the other reviews posted, I too had a wonderful experience at Thunder Mountain. I purchased my first shotgun earlier today and then spent the afternoon in the practice trap range shooting clays.

Since I arrived before opening time I had the opportunity to strike up conversation with a few of the regulars. These gentlemen were highly experienced shooters and were happy to offer some me some shooting advice and suggestions for equipment (recoil pad). Once the facilities opened, Ruth and her staff made me feel right at home(Thank you Laurie and Tyler). What else can I say, a great location and a pleasant, experienced staff. I’m hooked on shooting and cannot wait to get back up there.

I personally am by no means a good shooter! But, for my job, I was assigned to report on a story about Trap and Skeet Shooting at Thunder Mountain. I went and truly had an absolute blast!!! It was fantastic and I recommend the experience to anyone!

Here is a link to the story if you would like to check out my experience! Like I said, I’m not a natural! ha ha…

Great facility! The owners are pleasant and they assist in determining a shooter’s ability level. The pullers are as helpful as I have ever seen – they are patient with new shooters and provide guidance to all shooters as to where they’re shooting. The facilities are always kept clean, and the clubhouse couldn’t be more inviting when it’s cold outside! All in all, a great time whether one is a novice to the sport or a seasoned shooter.

Each and every visit to Thunder mountain results in A)a great time, B)alot of missed clays!
The traps are pretty well laid out, but the selling point of this place is the friendly service. The trap boys are eager to help you hit more, and the shop staff could not be more friendly.
If you visit one club in NJ, Thunder Mountain should be on the short list.

I just took a trip to this place today and I was amazed. Unfortunately because of the weather, foggy and overcast, it was hard to pick out the targets. But the staff understanding it was my first time there, and my friends first time even shooting a gun, were extremely helpful in providing tips and tricks of the trade. It is very well priced and had a good variety of targets. This is my top choice for skeet, trap, and five-stand.

Although a hunter for a number of years, I never shot trap/skeet until I recently went to Thunder Mountain with my wife and a friend (both novice shooters). The first time I ever shot any gun was here. Everyone was friendly and knowledgable. I have been there when the place is empty and when people are waiting to shoot, and either way, it was a great time. The fact that it is in the middle of the woods is great too. The lights for night shooting aren’t so good, I prefer daylight hours. Granted I live 8 minutes from Thunder Mountain, but even if I didn’t, I would take the time to venture there several times per year. It’s cheap and fun.
