The sporting clays course for us Mere Mortals is totally awesome. The Executive course is *EXCELLENT!* Great shotgunning facility, clean well-lighted place, super-friendly and helpful staff. Ammo prices are a touch higher than other sources, but that’s to be expected… Not out of line, by any means. I don’t get to this part of the state very often – I shoot at the other MI-Shoot course at Island Lake – but when I do get here I make it a point to bring Old Faithful and shoot a round.

Was just there last week on the executive course and 5 stand. Did some SC a year ago. Nice layout, friendly staff. Plenty of parking. May need a county park permit. Gun sales on premises.

I was just up in northern Michigan this week and stopped by this range on a spur of the moment trip. All I can say is that this facility is top notch. I was there shooting my 9mm and the place was spotless with SUPER nice staff. I want to go there on a Wed night just to shoot the steel targets. Indiana DNR needs to come up there and see what a real range looks like. I will be back.

Shot at this range by myself, with my wife, my grandson (and his girlfriend) and visited with my youngest grandson. The experience was always the same, friendly, friendly, and more friendly. My grandson made the same mistake three times in a row (range check) and the response was always the same, kind, understanding, and a lot more about how to do the right thing and why. The Range Officers at Bald Mountain create an environment that makes shooting fun, safe, and a learning experience. Thanks.

Great outdoor range, clean, well organized, friendly professional staff and knowledgeable range officers. My wife and two young daughters enjoy shooting at this range, great family activity and loads of fun!

One of the most challenging SC courses in the state. They have done an exceptional job making the course great for the experienced and fun for the first timer. Very reasonable for the level of difficulty offered.

No skeet or trap shooting but a really nice executive sporting clays course.

My son Reno turned 12 years old on Saturday October 9th.
He got his first .22LR/12Gauge Combo. So we went to Bald Mountain.
He and I were both impressed with the facilities. After getting used to the high powered blasts coming from our neighbors, we settled down and did some shooting. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly and made us feel welcome. It was a memorable moment for Reno and I.
Thanks Bald Mountain !!!!!

This place is great. The guy who runs the place (forgot his name) is really nice you can tell that he enjoys the sport and promoting it as well…unlike a close neighbor…eh hem DSC. Who wants old salts telling you how to shoot? Every time we’ve went its always been a good outing. The sporting clays has a nice progression from warm-up to more difficult targets as you move from station to station. Builds confidence but then helps you learn to shoot the more difficult clays as well. The website says they don’t have 5-stand but we just went last weekend and they do. 5 stand has 3 levels of difficulty. Check it out you wont be disappointed.

*I think the previous reviewer meant bring the guns the range unloaded… : )

Editor’s note: This review references the rifle and pistol ranges, not the clay target facilities.
The Range is now run by Michigan Shooting Centers, leased from the DNR. Rules are much the same. 6 round maximum loads in the magazine, 3 seconds between shots. Any caliber besides .50 BMG is welcome. Rifles and Pistols: 25 yard range (with movable stands for pistols), 50yd, and 100yd. I was told on my visit (Feb 25th, 2010) that shotguns were still down, but should be up soon. As with other DNR ranges in the area (Island Lake and Pontiac/Waterford) you’re going to be doing target checks when the ranger calls them. You must provide your own eyes and ear protection. If you’re visiting in the winter, the ranger will let you warm up in the heated shack from time to time. Sandbags are provided, with movable seats that make for easy shooting from the bench. Bring your own targets, but no human silhouettes.
Important for CPL-holders: All firearms must be brought to the range cased and loaded. If you’re carrying a concealed weapon and want to shoot it, unload it and case it in your car, otherwise they’ll require that you go back to your car and do it there. No Open Carry is allowed. Concealed Carry is fine, as long as you don’t plan on using it (i.e., you must keep it concealed).
Cost: $7 for the day per shooter. State Parking Permit is $6 for the day, $24 for an annual pass.

An outstanding facility that is run with some really great knowledgeable people.I enjoy shooting there because it is safe and made that way because of the way Ranger Phillips runs it.

march 2nd update. still closed for repairs. rifle and pistol in a couple weeks, MAYBE. NO clays anytime soon. still looking for someone to manage the place. the state runs the rifle/pistol side. a private vendor will run the clays, someday.

Bald Mountain is a great public course. I shoot there at least once a week. The shots are not too difficult, so the course is great for the casual shooter. The people that work there are super friendly, and the facility is pretty decent.
